Sports small team impresses track coach Bolstered by a strong overall team performance in sprint, dis- tance and field events, Parkland Secondary school’s track team placed fifth at the Lower Island senior championships last. week. Parkland ended the two-day meet at Centennial Stadium on Thursday with 127 team points, behind fourth place Claremont, with 188. St. Michael’s University school won the championships with 329 points. Both boys’ and girls’ units of Parkland earned points in all phases of the competition, from 100m sprints, to girls’ shot put, to boys’ pole vault. ~I didn’t expect that result with the numbers (of athletes) we had,” said coach Jaak Magi. ~ We're getting more individuals taking part in the field events, which helps the overall stand- ings,” he said. Leading the way for the girls’ team was Leanna Webber, who placed first in shot put with a throw of 9.64 metres. She also finished third in the discus and fourth in the javelin. Other Parkland girls with top- three showings were Dana Keller, second in the 100m hurdles in 17.2 seconds and third in the 100m in 13.7. She also finished fourth in the 400m hurdles. Sarah Thomber received thirds in the 800m (2:31.7) and 1,500m (4:55.1). The boys’ team was led by its sprint hurdlers. Geoff Wallace won the 100m hurdles in 18.8 seconds and was . fourth in the 400m hurdles, while Craig Combs emerged victorious in the 400m hurdles in 62.6 seconds. Sean Lyon iaade it three out of the top four in the 400m hurdles, claiming the bronze in 63.1 seconds. A youthful Adam Street posted two seconds against his senior Opponents in the boys’ sprints. He was the runner-up in the 100m (11.2 seconds) and the Standardbreds start season The standardbred season opens this weekend at Sandown Harness Raceway with the first parade to the post at 1 p.m. Saturday and continuing Sunday and Monday afternoons and Thursday evening until Sept. 8. Last year’s Friday night racing is eliminated and on holiday Mon- day weekends, there will be no racing the previous Thursday. Rather, races will be held on the Monday at 1:30 p.m. Raceway manager Jim Keeling, Sr., says 300-400 horses are expected throughout the season, although competition is expected to in short supply for the first two to three weeks. The season runs for 50 days this year, one less than last year. Milligan results The Glen Meadows Golf Club ladics division sponsored play for the Milligan Trophy last week. Winning the annual tournament was the team of George Wagg, Bob Shortreed, Donna Atfield and Shirley Sutherland. Second place went to the team of Phyllis Masson, Norman Wylie, Ken Coverdale and Del Goodwin. The tournament was a mixed scramble format. Competition for closest to the pin was also held for men. Closest to the pin on the 4th hole was Tim Thomas, while the 15th-hole honors went to Norman Wilcy. 200m (22.9). In boys’ pole vault action, Rod Sekulick finished third, and rounding out top-three Parkland showings, the boys’ 4 X 100m relay team was second in 47.2 seconds. The team consisted of Street, Lyon, Wallace and Jim Justice. STINGERS’? SHOT PUT A handful of Stelly’s Secondary school athletes also placed well at the championships. In boys*® events, Sean Lillis won the shot put with a throw of 12.52 metres, and Joe Box was third in the discus with a throw of 26.30 metres. Finally, some tracksters who train with the Peninsula Track and Field Club were among the best in their categories. Parkland’s Thornber is a mem- ber of the club, as is Chad DePol of Claremont, who won the boys’ 1,500m in a record time of 4:01.0. He was also named the meet’s outstanding male performer. Andrea DePol of the club was second in the girls’ 800m (@:21.1) and the 1,500m (4:52.5). Meanwhile, athletes with the North Saanich Middle school earned top placings at the All- Schools Relays last Monday to Wednesday at U'Vic. Jeannette Vandenbulk finished first in the girls’ 100m, while Tony Moran was second: in the boys’ 100m sprint. The midget girls’ 4 X 400m relay team placed second. The team was made up of Vandenbulk, Devon Ball, Cherie Haque and Tammy Wallace. And in the 4 X 800m Mixer, North Saanich earned a silver. The team was Vandenbulk, Moran, Reanna Roberts and Craig Pelton. North Saanich is coached by Chris Yan Gurp and Dennis Lin- doff. Cyclists keeping pace Parkland Secondary school’s cycling team is keeping pace with the leaders in South Vancouver Island High School Cycling League competition this spring. The team was scheduled to com- pete in five races, and is sitting in second place after two, said teacher/sponsor Bruce Melville. The team competed in three races, the latest May 3 at Shawni- gan Lake’s Tour du Lac. But Melville is waiting for results from that race to determine if Parkland maintained its second- place standing behind Mt. Doug. Jesse Berg, one of the team’s most consistent riders, placed third in the junior boys’ category in the race. The next action for the team was a road race scheduled for today in Saanich. Points are awarded if the top three riders for the team in each category place in the top 10 of their category. Melville said Parkland’s strength lies in the junior boys’ division. “This is very much building for next year. They re getting experi- ence,” he said. And unlike last year, this season the cyclists have been training on weekends since February. “This year we're more of a club,” said Melville, who co- coaches with Dave Smith, a com- petitive cyclist. Melville said he handles the organization and administration of the team, while Smith is involved in the on-road training.
