Sports Tyke Warriors undefeated after seven The Peninsula Warriors Bantam B lacrosse team was in tough last weckend. The Warriors dropped two games Saturday to the visiting Nanaimo 1 team at Panorama arena, The first game was an 8-2 defeat, with Lance Mayes and Steve Walden the Peninsula marksmen in the game. In the second game, Nanaimo swarmed the Warriors in a 10-3 win. New Bantam players scored the Warriors’ markers. Tom Paul, Steve Henry and Chris McDonald had a goal apiece, said team spo- kesperson Vicki Walden. PEE WEES The Pee Wee A Warriors split a pair of games last week against Saanich and Juan de Fuca. Last Wednesday, the visiting Warriors were defeated by Saanich 5-4. Peninsula carried the play throughout the contest. Their goal scorers were Mark Campbell with two, and Blake Munro and Sam Amos with singles. The next day, Thursday, Penin- sula rebounded with a strong per- formance in defeating Juan de Fuca 9-4. The Warriors overcame a 4-2 deficit. Scoring the hat trick was Dennis Baggett, while adding two each were Campbell, Graham Hembraff and Chris Olson. TYKES The Peninsula Warriors Tyke 1 Teamwork realized in Parkland soccer The score flattered the winners in Spectrum’s 3-0 victory over the Parkland Paniiers in high school senior girls’ soccer league play last week, says Parkland coach Joe Milligan. “They were a good team. Even though we were beaten 3-0, we played well against them,” he said. “Our girls played probably their best game of the year ... The girls have started to play as a team. “We controlled the play for much of the game.” He said Spectrum, which enjoyed the home-field advantage Tuesday, scored their first goal on a bad bounce and their second on a deflection. Spectrum took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break, and got Goal Two within the first five minutes of the second half. “Tt was one goal here and one goal there,” said Milligan. “Within that time frame we had a few chances to score but couldn’t.” The Panthers’ strong effort was boosted by a full complement of players, enabling coach Milligan to substitute freely. eB PAUL COFFEY. squad is off to a great start this year, with six wins and a tie in their first seven games. On May 7, the team eked out a 6-5 win in the rain against Saanich 1 at Lambrick Park. Chris Straub scored the hat trick, while J.J. Bernie had two and Ryan Werk the other marker. Dan LaPointe was a standout in goal, said coach Rick LaPointe. On May 2, the Warriors defeated the host Saanich 2 13-7. Matt Rodrigue Jed the way with five goals, and Brennan Gummer added four others. Meanwhile, the Tyke 2 team was busy over the past week. They lost their first game in the past five matches Thursday against Saanich 1 at Lambrick Park. Tyler Hall had two goals in the effort, while singles were chipped in by Laurie Melis, Ryan Morris, Sean Ferch and Kyle McInnis. Two days earlier, the Warriors - shutout Victoria/Esquimalt 4-0 in the driving rain, said team spokes- man Wayne Hall. Tyler Hall, McInnis, Ryan Mor- Tis and Wayne Morris scored’ for Peninsula. That shutout followed another last Monday against Saanich 2, which the Warriors won-7-0. Ferch nabbed the hat trick, while Melis, Ryan Morris, Steven Knotts and Jan Watson had singles. MINI-TYKES The Peninsula Mini-tykes won their match last week against Juan de Fuca 5-1. Teddy Sam scored all the Warrior goals. : He also scored twice in a 3-3 tie against the same team in earlier action. Gary Bowman had the other marker. Stelly’s rower making it big Andrew Preto, a Grade 11 French immersion student at Stelly’s is rowing eight times a week in preparation for the World Championships to be held in July of 1992, in Montreal. Currently, Preto is rowing for the Victoria City Rowing Club, after trying out for the squad in his second year of rowing. Preto rows for VWCRC’s varsity team and intends to continue row- ing through university with an eye towards a career in physical educa- tion and French. Highlights included debates with American high school students, a visit to the Science Centre, and viewing a performance of Dance Brazil. The band and choir returned Friday from a trip to Campbell River. The two high schools (Stelly’s and Carihi) have been participating in short exchanges for the past two years. Finally, the’sale of Stelly’s Envi- ronment Council T-shirts and sweatshirts has started. Funds raised will go towards the purchase of land in the threatened rainforest.
