Outdeors Speaking of orchids. I suspect that few of our readers realize that the orchid family is probably the largest family of flowering plants in the world, even rivalling the very widespread composites which include our asters, flea- banes, thistles, sunflowers, mil- foils, dandelions and false dande- lions, pussy-toes, arnicas, pearly everlastings, sages, balsam root, English daisies and oxe-eye dais- ics, hawkweeds, hawksbeards, gaillardia, gumweed, etc. etc. The orchids are a truly magnifi- cent group of flowering plants, much sought after in many parts of the world, especially in the tropics where so very many exotic and exquisitely colorful forms occur. But we do have a share of these most impressive plants. Lewis J.-Clark, in his superb Wild Flowers of the Pacific North- west, notes that some 40 forms occur in Our area. Many are well worth more than a casual acquaintance. Many, I am sure, recognize the delicate Pink Lady’s slipper or Calypso orchid and respond to its exquisite beauty and compelling fragrance. They know where in the forest to look for the thoroughly delightful single blossoms atop their slender graceful stems. _ And many know, too, that these jewels of the forest are not to be picked for they are held in place by only a few delicate fibres and are associated with certain essential fungi. They should be enjoyed in their shady woodland habitat and left there to flourish and enrich the lives of other travellers. The handsome aptly named coral roots belong to the group too. The slender, graceful purplish flowering stems arise from unde- rground stems which, lacking LADY'S SLIPPER CALYPSO ORCHID CY HAMPSON photo chlorophyll, subsist upon decaying organic matter and enliven the woodland floor with their purple or yellow attractive flowers. Yellow Lady’s Slippers and White Lady’s Slippers, or mocca- sin flowers, delight the observer with their showy, colorful flowers, CY HAMPSON photo tivalled only by the calypso or Fairy Slipper. The very beautiful round-leaved orchid is an absolute jewel with its enlarged, frosted snow-like, floral a _ lip brightly marked with deep purple spots. These, too, are wilderness flow- ers which unfortunately vanish with the incredible rush to destroy the very wilderness which pro- vides their essential habitats. Can humanity, itself born of wilderness, survive the loss? Strangely, the very strikingly pat- terned leaves of the rattlesnake orchids or Rattlesnake Plantains, are much more attractive than their slender spike of small greenish- white flowers. “Green orchids, bog orchids and rein orchids” (Habenaria) are rep- resented by several species. They tend to favour wet boggy areas and sport white or greenish flowers ranged in racemes along bright green stems. And who can forego the very delicate aroma of Hooded Ladies’ Tresses (Spiranthes) or fail to mar- vel at the wonderfully ranked white flowers which spiral smoothly up its pale green stem? ands Funeral Chapels 656-2932 or 388-5155 | Offer a complete choice of Professional Services. — TRADITIONAL — MEMORIAL — DIRECT CREMATION — FULL PRE-ARRANGEMENTS SERVICES Services from your church or in either of our chapels at 1803 QUADRA STREET VICTORIA or 317 GOLDSTREAM AVE.
