Feature TheReview Wednesday, May 15,1991 — A10 Opera’s popularity surprises Parkland student, earns trip to national science fair competition by Girard Hengen The Review Could it be that opera is the budding music of choice among high schoolers? According to the results of a questionnaire circulated by Kelly Gallins among her Grade 9 Park- land Secondary school classmates, that appears to be so. “That was startling,” lins of the result. The 14-year-old made the disco- very in a science fair project that has taken her to a national compe- {ition running this week in Van- couver. She is one of five youngsters who competed in the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair last month at UVic. Her presentation won the honor to advance to the Canada-Wide Science Fai, which began at the University of B.C. Sunday and continues until May 19. Her topic was called: “Esti- mates of the Passage of Time as Affected by Music.” She explains: “I am interested in music. I have played a musical instrument for seven years. “For me, some pieces seem to go on forever and some seem shorter, so I wanted to see if other people felt that.” She wondered if time seemed to go faster or slower depending on whether a person was in one kind of musical environment, like jazz, or another, like classical. Further, she hoped to discover if factors like familiarity, preference, volume and tempo influence a person’s percention of time. The questionnaire asked sub- . jects to record their impressions about nine pieces of music they listened to. Selections ranged from classic and new rock, country, classical, jazz, folk, clevator-type, and, of course, opera. She found that music did indeed affect one’s perception of the pas- sage of time. Different selections said Gal- Oo RE PRINT SPECIAL 39. from 120, 35 mm and 110 negatives only. 4°X6" ONLY H 0 U R Photofinishing put : ENINSULA | Cavin OUSE #3-7855 E. The Grade Nines felt folk music seemed to drag on the longest, while opera and rock selections were perceived to be the shortest. Gallins’ project will be compet- ing against those of over 700 students from 105 regions of Can- ada. Judging the projects will be about 150 experts in the academic and professional worlds. Her project was picked fourth overall at the Vancouver Island regional fair. She also won the Alzheimers Association award for originality. Other Parkland students came awards at the fair. Kelly’s brother Graeme, who is in Grade 10, was first in the senior division for his project, “A Study of the Occupational Objectives of Parkland students.” Leak Cooke won the $200 B.C Hydro award for “Solar Cells.” The Geological Association of Canada award went to Melissa Gignac for “The Great Shake.” Jill Favel won the Agriculture and Environment Association award for “Agricultural Erosion.” Brad Procter won the Gordon Patterson $50 Communication award for ““Depth Perception of the Eye.” Lisa Stewart received an honorable mention for ‘Oil Disas- ter at Sea,” and Carly Smethurst’s “Textiles” earned an honorable mention. Most of the projects were done for the Grade 9 honors science course taught by Gord Redlin. “I was very impressed with the quality of their work,” he said. He noted the students had less time this year to put their projects together because of the teachers’ Strike. Public Fax Service Use our number, we'll'call you when a fax comes in.
