Gardening Further information today on the proposed plant sale to be held late in September, proceeds to go the Auxiliary of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, who provide some of the fabulous extras that make our local hospital so special. Id like to quote from the letter from Phyllis Cox regarding this sale. She says it all. “The sale this year will be held at the home of Al Nicholls, 7127 Veyaness, in Central Saanich. This will allow for more space for the sale itself and; even more import- ant, excellent facilities for storage and care of potted perennials, taken from gardens throughout the summer months.” Further on she says, “We'd be happy to have seedlings, bulbs, plus any perennials which can be replanted for keeping until Sep- tember 21st. To get in touch with us, please call me (Phyllis Cox) at 656-9116 or Al Nicholls at 652- 9950. “We can give details on identifi- cation, potting, pick-up, if required, etc. We will be happy to pot plants for them, if they wish. The only requirements are that they be outdoor plants, are healthy, and are identified clearly.” Phyllis then gives what she calls a “tentative list” of plants that may be lifted at certain times. This should certainly be helpful to all of us: In cool spring weather — April, May, — Primroses may be divided when blossoms are finished. — Spring bulbs may be dug up after flowering ceases and leaves go brown; things like crocus, hya- cinths, snowdrops, bluebells, tul- ips, etc. — Forget-me-nots: clumps can be divided in spring or fall, and unwanted seedlings potted up at any time. — Doronicum: divide after bloom, or pot seedlings anytime. — Overgrown clumps of cam- panula, bergomot, pyrethrum , daisy, day lilies, coral bells, can be dug up, and divided. — Seedlings of Japanese ane- monies, gloriosa daisies, aubretia, spring flowering rock plants, per- ennial salvia, ground covers, etc., that may need thinning. In July and August: — Iris clumps may be divided when they get too crowded. — Onental poppies: lift when growth has died down, and separ- ate. (Last year we dug many of our plants during a cool spell in August. They had plenty of time to recover from transplant shock, and were growing well in pots by the time of the sale. Many were “‘vol- unteer’* seedlings that developed on their own.) Early September: — Red Hot Poker. Our own garden has way more than its fair share of shasta daisies, for example, and I could possibly spare a few Prairie cro- cus, and ... lemme think now ... probably some mint, lots of fall asters, several cotoneasters which have appeared in strange places, and I am sure there are lots of other things that would appreciate a new home! All in such a good cause, too, so if you have things to spare, please save them and either deliver them to Veyaness Road, or call Phyllis Cox or Al Nicholls to discuss possible pick-up. By the way, the project is not sponsored by the hospital auxiliary but is a pet project of Phyllis Cox’, who enlisted the help of many of her friends, some who happen to be hospital auxiliary members. All the proceeds will go to the hospital auxiliary as a donation. SALE SATURDAY Les Moore called to tell me about his dahlia sale.
