News OCP comparison possible Amendments to Central Saa- nich’s official community plan were finalized Wednesday by Cen- tral Saanich’s planning and zoning committee. Committee chairman Ald. Clar- ence Bolt said: “We've taken the OCP itself and noted the deletions and additions so you can pick up on the proposed amendments within the text itself.” Committee members made minor changes Wednesday in a session intended “to have council respond to the consolidated ver- sion,” Bolt said. The consolidated version 1s available for residents’ perusal, Bolt said. “People can see exactly what is changed and what isn’t.” Council May 6 decided that the official community plan docu- ment, as amended, will go to the pubic information stage and, further, that an amending bylaw be prepared. The proposed amendments were the subject of extended discussion by council members over past months. During discussion April 22 at least one alderman was ~ getting frustrated. “Here again we appear to be going around the mulberry bush,” said Ald. Arlene Box. “We've gone through this so many times I’ve got blue ink on my red ink on my pencil and we seem to be going back to the beginning again,” Box said. The committee was discussing changes in wording proposed by council’s advisory planning com- mission. Many of the over six pages of changes related to clearer word usage. “It looks imposing but a lot of the changes are just minor little points,” Bolt said. -Box also had a concern about the time the district 1s spending to complete its official community plan review, suggesting the review could be completed just in time to Start another. “We've been planning for two years now and it could-be three _ years,” Box said. The department plans to double the number of helicopters using the airport to 12 from six, intro- ducing a new shipbome aircraft to the area. The new aircraft will require new and expanded hangar space, maintenance facilities, increased administration, improved fuel stor- age and a helicopter jetty in Pat Bay. Although the new helicopters are larger than the Sea King heli- copter, a preliminary report by, environmental research associates LGL Limited suggests improved design makes the helicopters qui- eter. A copy of the LGL report is available at North Saanich and Central Saanich municipal halls and at the Sidney-North Saanich Library for perusal.
