Chamber calls for Pat Bay work Plans to upgrade the Pat Bay Highway have veered off course away from the original goal of building a safe and efficient high- way, Says the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. “We're having pressure groups telling the Highways Ministry how to design their highways,” cham- ber vice-president Paul Deeton said Monday. He said the chamber was opposed to changes to the Pat Bay expressway plan, including the complete abandonment of an interchange at Beacon Avenue. “The idea was to upgrade the highway to something that was going to be safe and efficient,” he said. “According to the chamber, this is not happening....We’re going backwards, and we have a poorer concept than we had when we » Started.” He said public input is needed, - but there comes a time when the _ experts in the Ministry have to show some leadership and push forward what they believe is the best solution to long-term traffic problems. A good example is the inter- change that was proposed for Bea- con in Sidney, he said. While the chamber doesn’t want a huge interchange at the intersec- tion, it does believe a scaled-down version should be built. “Let’s not eliminate it alto-~ gether,” said Deeton. Deeton was in Victoria Monday joining representatives from the Greater Victoria and Juan de Fuca chambers of commerce. In a joint Statement, the chambers presented their case to Highways Minister Lyall Hanson. They asked for the removal of all traffic-light controlled intersec- tions on the Pat Bay between Swartz Bay and McKenzie Ave- nue. They also called for a review of access and egress to Sidney and the airport, and the planning and construction of a single inter- change serving both. ands Funeral Chapels 656-2932 or 388-5155 Offer a complete choice of Professional Services. — TRADITIONAL — MEMORIAL — DIRECT CREMATION — FULL PRE-ARRANGEMENTS SERVICES Services from your church or in either of our chapels at 1803 QUADRA STREET VICTORIA Or 317 GOLDSTREAM AVE.
