Hotels honored

Two local hotels were hon-
ored with association awards
recently.

The Associated Canadian Tra-
velers’ 1990 Award for Hotel of
the Year, Pacific region, was
presented to the Hotel Sidney.

actually, it just got dropped off,”

Paquette said’ last week.

The award is based on service
and professionalism of the staff,
Paquette said. This is the first time
the Hotel Sidney has won the
award.

Paquette has-operated the fam-
ily-owned hotel since 1964. The
hotel has been in Sidney since
1891.

Between 30 and 40 staff are
employed at the hotel. An expan-
sion is now underway which will
add a 200 seat conference centre,
another 70 rooms and a wine and
beer boutique by June 1992.

“We're just generally sprucing
the whole place up,’ Paquette
said.

Honored with a four-diamond
rating by the American Automo-
bile Association was the Waddling
Dog Inn at the corner of Mt.
Newton Crossroad and the Pat Bay
Highway in Saanichton.

The hotel was one of seven to
earn the top rating from the associ-
ation. Other south Island hotels
honored with the four diamond
rating were the Empress, the
Laurel Point Inn, Oak Bay Beach
Hotel, Royal Scott, Grand Pacific
and Chateau Victoria.

Only four per cent of hotels
surveyed earn the top rating from
the association.
