Crown counsel Edward Ormheim said Central Saanich police responded to an alarm at the liquor store at 1:05 a.m. and found the front window of the store smashed, blood on the ground and cans of beer scattered around. Police spotted a figure lying in a field off Wallace Drive but the person ran away before being apprehended. A gym bag marked with blood and bearing the suspect’s name was found in the field, Ormheim said. Police notified Saanich Peninsula Hospital that a suspect may be: seeking treatment and at 1:30 a.m. the hospital advised police that lineal Mitchell had come to emergency for treatment, the court heard. After being treated, Mitchell was interviewed by police and admitted participating in the break-in with another person. Ormheim noted Mitchell has no previous criminal record: Defence lawyer Grant Warrington said Mitchell had been at a party with friends and had helped consume a 26-ounce bottle of alcohol before attempting the theft. He and another person at the party were both intoxicated when they agreed to break into the liquor store at the urging of other party-goers who wanted more alcohol, Warrington said.
