Community TheReview Wednesday, April 24,1991 — A13 Seniors fill volunteer posts on Peninsula brated from April 21 to 27. “The scope of volunteering opportunity has expanded,” “People shouldn’t feel guilty if they re not volunteering. I think people volunteer when their own needs are met,” Denroche said. Personally, after nine years of working with volunteers, Denroche and her husband are taking the next few months to enjoy their joint retirement and do activities they have put off for many years, including working in the garden of their North Saanich home. “We will eventually get involved in volunteering,”’ Denroche predicted. Senior power fuels many of the Peninsula’s volunteer agencies. Most volunteers are retired or semi-retired people, says Marjorie Denroche, who retired herself in December after nine years as Peninsula Community Association volunteer coordinator. “We have relatively few volun- teers 20 to 40 due to family and work commitments.” At one time the majority of volunteers were homemakers, Denroche said. The association is holding an open house from 9 a.m. until 4 p-m. both days at 9751 Third Street, Sidney. Community service coordinator Donna Godwin said the open house is to mark Volunteer Recog- nition Week, April 21 to 27. On April 19 the PCA. held an afternoon wine and cheese party for volunteers at St. Elizabeth’s Church. PCA programs are supported by about 150 volunteers annually. “The majority are seniors and we're sure grateful for that because theyre the ones that stay,” God- win said. However younger volunteers are also needed. Especially needed are high school students to help with the Sneakers and Paper Commun- ity Connection after-school pro- gram for children.
