Community Words stand alone ‘or Wired Writers by Valorie Lennox The Review Only the words reach North Saanich writer Susan Musgrave when she edits work by students signed in to Wired Writer, a com- puterized writing workshop based at Simon Fraser University. By computer and modem the words flow from student writers across Canada to the screen of Musgrave’s computer terminal. Her comments flow by the same route back to the students. For sgrave, accustomed to giving sttdent workshops in per- son, seeing only the students’ work is a new experience. “You don’t have any faces to put with the writing on the screen,” she remarked. Without the intimacy of meeting the students, she feels she edits more strictly. “I’m more forgiving in person. When face to face with someone | find it harder to be critical.” Musgrave is one of seven Cana- dian writers editing work submit- ted by 900 students in 26 schools to the computer network. She reviews two to three dozen pieces a week, which she admits takes more time than the four hours of editing time funded by the Writer’s Development Trust. “If youre conscientious you spend a lot more time than that.” WIRED WRITERS sent their work fo North Saanich author Susan Musgrave through a Computer nef- work for editing. anyone would take time to think: through what they’re writing,” One teacher told Musgrave that the students discuss work in class as if Musgrave is part of the class. “They say things like: Susan will like this.” The students receive samples of work done by each of the profes- sional writers on the network, so ‘Getting feedback — that’s the hardest thing in the world for any writer to gef’ One short story may take 20 minutes to review, however most of the students write poetry or very short pieces of prose. Musgrave tries to encourage the students and hears from teachers that the students are very excited when their work is critiqued by professional writers. “Mostly they're amazed that: are familiar with each writers’ work, Musgrave said. Some students give themselves Names to use on the computer. Wired Writer founder Trevor Owen encourages students to use pseu- donyms when submitting work. “The work is permitted to stand alone, without reference to factors that might present themselves in other arenas. Gender, race, eco- This poem, by Vernon Secondary student Lee Shedden, was delivered by modem to Susan Musgrave’s computer terminal last Wednesday. There's something about the sound of a zipper coming down that makes one think of the SenmD of pants falling to the floor around white ankles makes one think of sleeping bags and tents and makes one think of whispered invitations to events that no decent person would ever attend. I think what my school needs is @ thousand zippers (there's strength in numbers) coming decisively down at once — a glorious sound! a thousand pairs of pants parachuting to-the floor in unison and a day of wearing only shirts I think it would make us all a little braver a little closer and maybe we could all fall in love. In addition to submitting their own work, students comment on each other’s work. Musgrave recalls heated on-line debate over a fable by one student. In the fable a fox picked up a chicken from a bar for a one-night Stand, only to learn later that the chicken had AIDS. Many of the pieces are tragic love poems and, recently, poems and stories about war. There are a few comic or whimsical pieces. Musgrave often advises the stu- dents to eliminate rhyming in their poetry if the effort to rhyme inter- feres with the message of the poem. “Quite often the rhyme gets in the way of what they want to say. I’m teaching them to show, not tell, because that is the main problem many of these writers have.” TheReview Wednesday, April 24, 1991 — Al2 She responds to each submis- sion within a week. “I really like it when they get wild, their imagina- tions start working,” The project gives the student writers valuable comments on their work from professional writ- ers and from their peers. “Getting feedback — that’s the hardest thing in the world for any writer to get. You can only go so far in your work before you need to have someone look at it objec- tively.” Musgrave joined the network in December and will be editing student work until June. “Tl be sorry when it is over.” Learning the gi Ropes Pays Off (remy e Bole § JAY LYN JEWELLERS "_ OOLDSMIT €CEMALOMIET one’ on) Location #12 - 2510 Bevan Ave. (Corner of 2nd & Bevan, Sidney) HOURS: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Sat. 656-5556 |.
