aS NR First fun in May Three days of fun on the May long weekend will be the first in a year-long series of celebrations for Sidney’s Centennial. Events are planned for Port Sid- ney, the town wharf and the park east of the museum. “It’s the first time we have run a three-day event during May,” said Don Trivett, Chairman of the Peninsula Celebrations Society. “We've had great cooperation from many sources and the Cen- tennial celebrations gave us a theme.” The weekend will start Friday evening at Sanscha Hall with a family fun night, including musi- cal entertainment, performers, a bake sale and the presentation of Sidney’s Centennial Youth Ambassadors. At the Legion Hall on Mills Road the Peninsula Singers will present a spring concert honoring Sidney. Members of the Sidney and North Saanich councils are expected to attend both events. * * x Everyone is invited to become part of Sidney’s Heritage Centen- nial Time Capsule, which will be sealed during the Sept. 20 to 22 music festival weekend. The capsule is to be opened in 2091. For a nominal fee of $10 per individual or $25 per family, names, photographs and a short message will be included in the time capsule. Proceeds will go to support Sidney’s Centennial Cele- brations. Time Capsule applications may be picked up at the Sidney town hall or during the May 18 festivit- ies marking the opening of the new town bandstand east of the museum. ‘ For more information on Cen- tennial celebrations or to volunteer assistance, contact the Peninsula Celebrations Society at 656-4365. English as a second language programs cost the province $40 million annually. “Who should pay for those programs?” Couvelier asked. Other provinces are already making some tough decisions. Manitoba has laid off 2,000 public servants and closed hospital beds. Some jurisdictions have elimi- nated wage increases for public employees, yet in B.C. the three to four per cent ceiling on wage hikes has generated protest, Couvelier noted. He anticipates bringing in a tough budget that will be strongly criticized but says increases must be controlled.
