SIDNEY MUSEUM photo Whale cleaning chore complicated A 24-foot killer whale skeleton is destined to become a showpiece attraction for the Sidney Historical and Marine Mammal Museum. But getting the remains of the specimen to showroom condition is proving to be one massive headache for museum curator Cal- vor Palmateer. The whale’s remains have been in the water for about four months now, undergoing a natural cleaning by sea creatures. But after being submerged for six months or so, a lot of the bones can go soft. Last _ time the remains were pulled up, ~ not enough flesh had deteriorated. “T’ve got to get on with this and get something done because of the problem of the bone dissolving in Salt water,” said Palmateer. “I want it out of the water and partially cleaned by mid- summer.” That, however, is no simple task. The four-tonne female whale was found washed up on a Mal- colm Island beach, near Telegraph Cove, in mid-November. It was cut into sections so that it could be moved to Sidney. The huge carcass was left in the water for three months in Pat Bay, where shrimp and sea lice removed some flesh and meat from its bones. Over the last month the pieces, Set in a cage, have been sitting in the water next to the Institute of Ocean Sciences dock. Once the bones are cleaned, the Imammoth task of reconstructing the skeleton can begin. But that’s Come Home to the Beechwood only if the bones can be cleaned in time. Palmateer’s dilemma is the Institute site hasn’t worked. “Tt hasn’t been cleaned that well,’ he said. There aren’t enough crabs in the area to do the job. Now, once the logistics are worked out, he plans to truck the 1,000-Ib. cage to the town’s works yard and hose off the remains within the next week or two: If that doesn’t work, the next alternative is finding a way to transport. the specimen to deep water in Squally Reach and lower it about 300 feet, where it is hoped a type of sea bug will devour the remaining flesh. “That’s where we have to go if we want it cleaned very quickly.” at the Beechwood. . . It’s people caring about “PEOPLE” It’s like “COMING HOME.” Our Resident Helen Greenwood Comments: me Becciwood VILLAGE SIDNEY BY THE SEA - 2315 MILLS ROAD, SIDNEY, B.C.
