in this province every year. It is
spraying, not the gypsy moths
which must be stopped.

Docks needed for
the foot of Beacon

As a new summer approaches, |
am glad to see a new Town council
in place.

With all the problems the new
marina has been faced with, it is
refreshing to see reasonable minds
leading us. As far as the new
Marina goes, it 1s very nice, but a
private dock. This would be fine if
the taxpayer’s money was not used
to develop it.

I would like to see the re-

establishment of the docks at the ~

foot of Beacon Avenue; The two
docks that for decades served the
town for local events, passenger
pick up and drop off, Coast Guard
and Navy training vessels and
close access for medical emergen-
cies.

The dock is home to a viable
fish plant operation which no
longer has docking facilities for
transient commercial fish boats,
which in previous summers, fre-

quented the docks, as well as the °

local merchants buying food and
supplies.

As I understand it, fishing boats
of any kind are not allowed into
the new breakwater.

The cost to replace the docks for
the summer months would entail
less than one day’s labor. The
benefits to the local merchants are
immeasurable. I am sure the loss
must be felt.

I hope that the “new” Town
council will consider ‘the renewal
of the docks for the business
people and for all the people, like
myself, who have fond memories
of the docks and warm summer
days.

Worker safety
matters to us

The Federal Government has
teceived Royal Assent for Bill
C-223, the Workers’ Mourning
Day Act, which became law in
Canada on February Ist of this
year.

Each year over a thousand Can-
adian workers die in industrial
accidents, thousands more are
injured, many permanently disa-
bled. Thousands-of workers con-
tinue to be exposed to hazardous
materials where the effects of such
exposure do not show up until
years later.

April 28th has been chosen as a
day of mourning in Canada

because it was on this date that the
first Workers’ Compensation Act
in Canada received third reading.

The idea behind the “Day of
Mourning” is to allow time for
reflection on our respective work-
sites. It is a time to remember
those who have died or have been
injured because of an industrial
accident.

April 28th is the day set aside to
pause and think about friends
injured at work and to make a
tésolve that this must stop. Wor-
kers’ safety matters more to us as a
society than the rush of the job or
the burry for a buck.
