Youth stages bicycle theft Staging a theft cost a Sidney youth his part-time job, $740 and besmirched an otherwise blameless reputation, Judge Lawrence Brahan noted in Sidney provincial court March 28. The youth, 15, pleaded guilty to theft under $1,000 and was sentenced to six months probation and 50 hours community work SE€TVice. Crown counsel Ed Ormheim said the young man stole a $740 bicycle from a store where he was employed part-time, cutting a padlock to make it appear the theft was the result of a break-in, The youth cooperated with police in recovering the bicycle and has no previous history. Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said the youth staged the theft to prove to his friends such a theft could be done but had no use for the bicycle since he already owned a bicycle. The youth planned to retum the bicycle to the store but found the bicycle had been stripped of parts by his friends. The youth paid the store owner for the bicycle and returned the bicycle, gathering the missing parts from friends and! assembling the bicycle, McKimm said. Although offered the bicycle, since he had already paid for it, the youth refused, MckKimm added.
