< ih Business TheReview Wednesday, April 17,1991 — A24 No to 5.5 per cent tax increase A proposed 5.5 per cent tax hike in Central Saanich prompted the Central Saanich Business Associa- tion to do a quick survey. Survey says: Almost 400 people don’t want a tax increase. “The apparent conclusion is that the public wishes to see this municipal government be more financially responsible and crea- tive in their expenditures,” busi- hess association directors Cory Porter and Garry Bentham said in a joint statement. A petition asking council to “review the 5.5 per cent increase for the 1990-91 taxation year with the possibility of reducing it” was signed by 376 residents after being left at five local businesses for Restaurant sold Sidney’s Carrington Wyatt has served its last tea and crumpet. Owner Wally Foster sold the First Street restaurant to Jack McNeill effective March 15: McNeill plans to renovate the premises into a seafood restaurant called Squid Row. Foster said he decided to sell the business after receiving a good offer from McNeill. Foster bought the Carrington Wyatt in 1986, after visiting the south Island from Alberta and deciding he wanted to move to the area with his wife, Patty, and seven days, Central Saanich coun- cil heard Monday. Bentham said it was just a questionnaire to see how people felt and, although the business association initiated it, ““we are drawing no conclusions except comment from the public.” Ald. Jack Mar suggested council receive the information from the business association and ask that a representative attend the next finance committee meeting “and see what suggestions they have to holding the tax down.” Council agreed. In the statement, the association said: “It is noted that private and business people alike have many times been forced to adjust their spending habits in order to survive. It is apparent the public wishes government to be able to do the same.” . NEW SERVICE! Parklands Secondary School presents *E.S.P. %* Magic %* Hypnotist Wed.
