A MEDIUM-SIZED WHALE, the Iisso’s dolphin, lives primarily
in tropical waters but occasionally visits the B.C. coast in
late spring, summer and early fall. Risso’s dolphins may
grow as long as four metres and weigh up to 680
kilograms. Dark grey at birth, the whales keep this color on
their flippers, fins and tail flukes but the rest of the body
tums pale grey and white as they reach adulthood. At
close range there is no mistaking a Risso’s dolphin as their
bodies are almost completely covered with white scars.
These scratches and oval patches are attributed to
encounters with other Risso’s dolphins or to squid attacks.
Almost exclusively squid eaters, Risso’s dolphins have a
unique set of teeth. There are usually only two to seven
pairs on the tip of the lower jaw and none in the upper
Jaw. Active animals, Risso’s dolphins may be seen “‘por-
poising “in herds of several hundred individuals. There will
be a special slide presentation on whales at the Sidney
Museum at 12 noon April 10, 11, and 12 in recognition of
National Wildlife Week, April 7-13.
