~~ TheReview Wednesday, April 10,1991 — A113 The patients are taking wing from the Wildlife Reserve of West- em Canada this spring. A barred owl, a peregrine falcon and a mute swan have either been released or are about to be released after treatment at the sanctuary. Rarest of the three is the pere- erine falcon, found with a broken wing on McTavish Road in North Saanich. é Veterinarian Don Wilson of Brentwood, who volunteers his skills, pinned and strapped the broken wing. The bird will be released “as soon as he gets enough strength into the wing,” says director Alex Matheson. Matheson suspects the bird may have hit some power wires. Eagles focus on their ground-level prey when in flight and may not see the intervening wires when striking. The swan, suffering from a dis- ~ located wing, was rescued from Colquitz Creek off the Gorge inlet. Wilson also fixed the wing and the swan has now been released on the grounds of the reserve, to fly away aS soon as the bird gains enough strength. The third patient is a mature barred owl which suffered a bro- ken leg when hit by a car The leg has been pinned and is healing but the owl may be kept at the reserve because the bird is blind in one eye. Without sight in both eyes, Matheson said it may impossible for the owl to judge distance and be able to survive in the wild. If necessary, a large pen will be built for the owl, Matheson said. “He might become a permanent resident.” Donate discards Spring cleaning discards can help provide a haven for injured wildlife on the Wildlife Reserve of Western Canada in North Saanich.
