Sidney based Diet Centre owner Julie Bailey lost 40 pounds on the centre program in 1983 — and has kept the weight off ever since. She says the weight loss pro- gram, Started 20 years ago by Sybil Ferguson with the help of her doctor, is geared towards life-long weight management instead of a “quick fix. “J tell my clients: to throw the word diet right out,” Bailey says. “Don’t diet but be on a program. We try to give the client a program for the rest of his or her life. “Losing the weight is peanuts compared to keeping it off.” Some people can make the lifes- tyle changes required on their own but the daily counselling given by Diet Centre makes the difficult task easier, Bailey said. For many Diet Centre clients, the daily program is exactly what they need to lose weight and leam to eat sensibly. “Often by the time we see people they’ve tried everything else,” Bailey said. Most likely to be successful are those who are losing weight in search of a healthier lifestyle. Peo- ple who are trying to lose weight just for a specific event — such as an upcoming vacation or wedding — can lose the motivation to stay on the program once the event is over. All of the staff have succeeded on the Diet Centre program and must keep their weight at a normal range in order to continue working at the centre. This gives them additional understanding when dealing with clients. “We are all really peer counselors,” Bailey said. Clients range in age from 13 to over 80. “There’s no one who cannot diet on the Diet Centre program,” Bailey said. Special features of the program include equipment to measure the percentage of fat in the client’s body. With this information, the weight loss can be tracked to ensure fat is being lost instead of water or lean body tissue. The program counts nutrients instead of calories and includes a supplement to stabilize blood sugar levels. Vitamins are taken Hospice help Dive in to help the Victoria Hospice Society by participating in the sixth annual Swim-a-Thon April 25 at the Panorama Leisure Centre from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Swimmers are invited to obtain pledges for cach length completed during the hour-long swim. Although some low calorie alternative products are available through the centre — and are also offered at a local grocery store — clients are not required to use the products. “It’s not pre-packaged foods,” Bailey said. “We eat all the real stuff in the grocery store.” A qualified nutritionist is among the Diet Centre support Staff. Each program is adjusted to each individual client and the need for regular exercise is stressed. The balance between protein and carbohydrates on the program leads to a good loss of inches for the weight loss, Bailey said. The foods on the program are also designed to stabilize blood sugar levels, she added. Before she went on the Dict Centre program, Bailey did not know about the importance of stabilizing her blood sugar to con- trol her weight. She was impressed enough with her own experience to buy the business three years after her own weight loss. The centre now has a clientele of 35 to 65 people each month, who are guided through the five- phase program. People should leave the program with the skills to eat sensibly for the rest of their lives, Bailey said. “We're allowed to eat anything — but we want to make the right choices nine times out of 10.” Blood clinic A Red Cross Blood Donor clinic will be held at Claremont Secon- dary School, 4980 Wesley Road, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. The school’s blood drop mascot will be on hand to welcome don- ors and Q-100 will be on location with their boom box.
