News ——————————— SIDNEY RCMP HAVE NOT laid charges in connection with this single vehicle accident, which happened April 1 at about 4:30 p.m. on Lochside Drive south of the McTavish Road intersection. The late-model Hyundai skidded out of control and wound Up in the difch, police said. A 30-year-old Sidney man, a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police said the accident was alcohol related, but nobody has been charged because they cannot determine who was driving the car, school staff and programs being cut Cuts to staff and services in Saanich School District 63 will be required to correct a $2.66 million shortfall in the budget, caused mainly by the recent teachers’ contract, trustee David Christian said Monday. Contractual obligations incurred to end the teachers’ strike are the major reason for the budget short- fall, he said. Inflation and the GST, increased UIC costs and increased enroll- ments added minor increases to the overall budget, Christian added. The increased enrollments are also offset by increased gov- ermment funding for additional siudents, he said. Senior administrators will be reviewing programs and staff to identify where cuts can be made. The board is to decide on the cuts at the May 13 meeting. “We ve asked our senior admin- istrators to find out how we are going to cover this shortfall — cutting services, cutting teachers, cutting everything they can cut,” Christian said. The board will try to keep the cuts from affecting non-teaching CUPE staff, who have already lost 12 and a half days’ work through If you're NEW IN TOWN and don't know which way to turn, call the Weome gone LTD You'll be glad you aid. hostesses at: 4 (Sidney & North Saanich) : Theresa Thom 656-7746 || Claudia Parfitt 656-7898 |: (Brentwood & Central Saanich) } Frances Suddaby 652-7767 Vicky Jackson 652-5689 (Baby Welcome) @ Fern Gifford 656-8932 Welcome Wagon Answering Service 479-3385 the teachers’ strike, Christian said. The board does not plan a referendum to ask for increased taxes to cover the budget increase and does not plan deficit financ- ing, he added. The district has a total budget of $43 million and an operating budget of $39.7 million. Per pupil funding from the province increased by 2.6 per cent for 1991-92. ? Saanich Teachers’ Association President Vincenza Cameron said she was disappointed the board is planning budget cuts instead of attempting to get more provincial funding for education. “We're already pretty close to the bone. Teachers’ Federation recommended prov- ince-wide one-hour work stoppage April 17 to protest the provincial government’s Bill 82. That bill limits salaries, benefits and working conditions.
