FBDB courses help business Small Peninsula businesses that want help in keeping one step ahead of the competition can now get help from the Federal Business Development Banks The government organization is offering a special two-hour intro- ductory counselling session to small businessmen. Known as the Counselling Assistance To Small Enterprises program, the project has won the approval of at least one Peninsula businessman. Frank Malerby, who owns the Village Gallery in Sidney, said the marketing advice and financial analysis the program offered him was a “tremendous boom” to his att gallery. He’s successfully expanded his business and has increased his tumover by about 30 per cent since getting about 20 hours of planning advice from a FBDB counselor in February of last year. The professional advice provid- ed by the FBDB helped to identify business goals and ways to best achieve those goals, Malerby said. “The process of planning my business expansion fulfilled a val- uable function,” he said. “The counselling won’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear but it helps a good deal for people who already have a goal in mind.” The cost of the business assess- ments 1s $49 for two hours in the FBDB offices in Victoria or $79 for a visit from an adviser at a client’s place of business. The $15,000 study is being conducted by Business and Indus- try Development B.C., which is sponsored by the B.C: Trade and Development Corporation. B.C.’s former international busi- ness minister Elwood Veitch (now Minister of Finance) said only four to six per cent of the federal government’s domestic purchases were made in this province between 1987 and 1990, “As B.C. produces about 12 per cent of Canada’s goods and ser- vices, we have much more work to do in marketing ourselves and this study will help significantly,” Veitch said.
