# ‘- * News 2ames Island development going full speed ahead by Glenn Werkman The Review Construction on James Island is in full gear with over 60 workers and’ 38 pieces of equipment trans- forming the 764-acre island into a residential resort with a ‘Jack Nicklaus signature golf course,” Pacific Parkland Inc. director Reid Topp said Tuesday. “The golf course is all finished but were re-doing it,” Topp said. “We signed a contract with Jack Nicklaus and we will be working on a Jack Nicklaus signature course.” Topp said the company is just finishing plans and drawings on “the parking thing that everyone worries about” and will make an announcement soon. Other work on the island is underway or will be shortly. A desalinization plant to pro- duce potable water for future homeowners “is already pur- chased and will be going in pretty soon,” Topp said. The company has applied for a licence of occupation with the Ministry of Crown Lands to expand a moorage facility on the west side of the island in an area commonly known among boaters as the gunk hole. Topp said the facility currently juts straight out from shore and Pacific Parkland wants to “change the shape of it so itll go cros- 4 @ sways.” The application doesn’t sit well with Jack Grisley, who was involved with the Friends of James Island before it was purchased by Pacific Parkland. L Mangoes presents Their Spring Fashion Show & Dinner (Hot and Cold Buffet will be served) “We have a letter of intent not to useé the gunk hole,” Grisley said. Addressed to the B.C. Council of Yachts, the December 1988 letter States “the area will be maintained as traditional public anchorage with no change to its traditional use.” It is signed by Pacific Park- land’s vice-president of planning, Tom Loney. “It’s a bit of a reneg as far as we're concemed,” Grisley said. “The gunk hole should remain public.” According to Grisley’s interpret- ation of the submitted plans for the licence of occupation, a mini- marina will be built that could accommodate up to 34 boats. Topp said the area is planned for a maximum of 10 boats, owned by Pacific Parkland staff. A full-size marina is planned for the northeast area of the island near what is known as the powder wharf. “We're not planning to use it as a major area,” Topp said. “Our marina will be on the other side of the island.” In other developments related to James Island, Pacific Parkland founder and past-president Marv Holland is no longer associated with the development. Contacted Sunday, Holland said: “T haven’t been involved in James Island since August.” Holland had just returned from an extended vacation in Central America. “In the two-and-a-half years I was involved with James Island I didn’t have the time to devote to other interests,” Holland said. Holland believes the project will continue on the same concept he had planned, with about 210 luxu- R SHOW: Hair will be by > 4509 West Saanich Rd. Victoria, B.C. One of the reasons Holland left the project was because of delays in receiving approvals from vari- ous authorities. “In normal business things move rather quickly. This has had just endless waits,” he said. Reid confirmed there has been an influx of new money into the project but refused to divulge its source. Holland confirmed he was bought out but said he is unsure of its source, as “all the funds were paid through the lawyers.” Topp said the company plans to have residential lots available for CALL ME BEFORE YOU BUY A QUALITY MATTRESS NORM MacDONELL 995-0024 TheReview Wednesday, March 27, 1991 purchase by this fall. ““We’re going to finish the whole thing before we open it for sale.” Construction of the James Club, a central focus point, will be open to bids by local builders through a tender process later this spring, he Said.
