Community «Never say diet tolase p weight by Valorie Lennox | The Review Want to lose weight? Don’t diet. That’s the advice from Saanich Peninsula Hospital registered die- titian-nutritionist Marlyn Davis and two hospital employees, who have both lost weight following Davis’ advice. “Dieting doesn’t teach anybody to adopt an eating style which is a healthy eating style for the rest of their life,” Davis said. For many people, diets are a temporary measure, a quick fix for excess weight, Davis said. Most are too low in calories to be nutritionally adequate and are so restrictive that the dieter can only follow them for a limited amount of time. Once the diet stops, the weight comes back. Kandise Froese, a health data technician at the hospital, found diets did not stop her from gra- dually gaining weight. “Td would lose weight while I was on the diet then the weight would gradually come back because by food choices weren’t as healthy as they should have been.” - Froese feels programs which supply pre-packaged food do not teach the dieter how to eat for the rest of his or her life. Following Davis’ advice has helped her lose weight without dieting. “She teaches a lot of common sense and emphasizes planning,” Froese said. Planning starts with shopping. Pauline Heaton, a physiotherapy aide at the hospital, has lost a Significant amount of weight fol- lowing Davis’ advice. “Tm really careful about what is in the house,” she says. She knows her greatest time of weak- ness is when she arrives home after work. “I'd hit the door at 5 p.m., starving. And what's the easiest thing to eat? Cookies.” There are no cookies in Heaton’s home. Instead she ensures there is a low-calorie snack ready. Both Heaton and Froese passed on some of the tips they use to win at losing weight. Heaton controls her fat intake, increases the amount of vegetables she eats and only eats chicken and fish. When shopping, she picks up vegetables first. She tries to divide her daily intake of calories into three equal portions. Davis suggests an equal division Editor: Valorie Lennox 656-1151 of calorie consumption throughout the day can have a significant effect. Some people can lose weight and get their required nutrients on 1300 to 1400 calories of well-chosen foods each day. Davis finds many diets are too low in calories and nutritionally inadequate. Another danger of low-calorie diets is that they encourage the body metabolism to slow in order to conserve energy, so the dieter regains lost weight more quickly after the diet. Regular exercise combined with sensible eating is the best possible means of losing weight, Davis said. Heaton walks a lot but she doesn’t do any formal exercising. “They have an aerobics class at the hospital which I avoid like the plague. I have no conscience.” Froese enjoys the aerobics class. She also runs on alternate days and estimates she does at least a half-: hour of exercising five days a week. She has added more vegetables to her meals, despite her hus- band’s preference for meat and potatoes. “Tf you have more vegetables, BD Git . «) Certificates = for Easter from ~ $1.00 5 SIDNEY quay DQ * 2323 Bevan Ave. We treat you right! ~ 656-3339 The Diet Center* Difference Julie Bailey Owner/Counsellor Lost 40 pounds and 48 inches in 1983 Campbell River 286-6812 Nanaimo TAS 22 Shelbourne, Victoria 477-7600 Port Alberni 723-6114 Duncan 748-3436 Port Hardy 949-7553 @® Parksville 248-8484 Oak Bay 598-3511 Downtown, Victoria 385-2145 Colwood, Vicloria 476-3511 Jown & Country, Vicloria 361-4822 Sidney Diet Centre Marina Court, 9843 Second Si. 656-9505 Dieta - The weight-loss professionals® you tend to eat less of the other things,” she said. It’s not a diet,’ Froese said. Both agree it is a matter of making choices. Continued on Page A19_ .
