Doing much of the work them- selves and a strict budget kept the costs of the trip low, Howard said. He built and equipped their boat, Lorcha, himself in the back- yard of their home. The name of the boat is derived from an 18th Century Portuguese sailing ship which combined a European hull with three masts of Chinese sails. In similar fashion, Lorcha was based on a Dutch design but fitted with a single Chinese style lug sail. Howard has been. sailing for about 20 years. He and his wife spent two years sailing Mediter- ranean and Black Sea after they were married, then returned to Toronto. “Six years later, now with two children in tow, we set out on this trip around the world,’ Howard said. Building the boat only cost $40,000, not including Howard’s labor. He estimates the trip cost $10,000 to $12,000 annually. “It’s very inexpensive to do this sort of voyaging.” the civilizations surrounding the Mediterranean to his children first- hand. “In another couple of years we'll go again.
