News TheReview Wednesday, March 13,1991 — A3 «leachers rally at board office . }_—aP- So by Glenn Werkman The Review Calls to re-open negotiations and a 20-second standing ovation by Saanich teachers in support of a contract rejection vote in Sanscha Hall Monday marked the sixth day of strike action by about 450 teachers in the Saanich School District. School board chairman Marilyn Loveless said the “well is dry, there are no more cookies in the cookie jar, call it what you want, but there’s no more money.” The school district put their final contract proposal on the table in a meeting Sunday. It was rejected by a unanimous vote in a meeting Monday, with only one teacher abstaining because she said she doesn’t understand the contract. Saanich Teachers’ Association president Vincenza Cameron urged the membership to reject the offer “because I believe this board owes you a hell of a lot better offer.” “We have a problem and the problem is the board is not negoti- ating with us,” Cameron said. “How can we change that situa- tion? One is to make the board aware that we want to go back to the bargaining table.” Yo demonstrate that desire teachers were to gather at the board office on Keating Crossroad for an 11 am. Tuesday rally. Cameron said that both sides are very close to an agreement. “We're just at the fine-tuning stages,” she said. Cameron couldn’t say how much more money would be need- ed for a settlement to be reached. “That dollar figure at this time is illusive. The only one we know is the salary.” Cameron said the board refuses to return to the bargaining table. “Twice our invitations to retum to the bargaining table have been met with outright refusal. In short the board is saying we, the trustees, will determine in our own right the salaries and working conditions of our professional employees.” Loveless said that while there is no new money, the teachers are free to “establish priorities within the package.” Loveless said there could be some confusion in the terms being used by each side. The board is prepared to meet and discuss, but not bargain or negotiate, she said. south Keating geis promise of sewers Residents of the South Keating Ridge area gave council a round of applause Monday after hearing plans to hook up their homes to the main sewage pipeline. Meeting as the sanitation and water committee, council said it would service in excess of 84 homes at a cost of about $1,800 per household to Central Saanich. Municipal engineer Al Mackey said work on extending the sewer system to the area could begin as early as the spring of next year and would take about three years to complete. : Representing area residents, Douglas Stewart told council that septic tanks on the ridge had been leaking for some time, leading to pollution of waterways. Running water tested in a ditch at the corner of Central Saanich Road and Tanner Road was found O’PRAIRIE INN to be heavily contaminated in a March 7 test conducted by a Sidney laboratory, he said. MB Research and Develop- ment’s findings showed the fecal colliform count of the water was 7,600 cfu/100 cc. The Capital Regional District closes beaches to swimmers as a health safety measure if lake water measures in excess of 400 cfu/100 ce. The runoff water from South Keating Ridge poses a serious health risk because it feeds Sand- hill Creek, which runs through area farms and residential areas, one South Keating Ridge resident Stewart said he has waited a dozen years to have his home hooked up to the main sewage pipeline and he’s relieved council has at last put the matter to rest.
