ee News Parent group gathers support for replacement middle school site Members of a parent group spent last weekend petitioning Support for the construction of a new middle school on agricultural land near West Saanich and Ben- venuto roads in Brentwood Bay. “Written submissions to the agricultural land commission have to be in by the end of this week,” said Mona Nyberg, a chairperson on the Parents for Safety and Replacement of Mt. Newton Mid- dle School Committee. In gathering signatures, Nyberg said many people wondered why other sites have not been pursued, while others thought the necessary approvals were received for the school to go ahead. Central Saanich council sup- ported the school district’s appli- cation to the land commission requesting that special non-farm use be permitted within the Agri- cultural Land Reserve. Surrounding the 11-acre parcel at the southwest corner of West Saanich and Benvenuto Avenue is a pre-school, a commercial green- house operation, pastureland and residential homes. . Nyberg said that there are some - flaws with all the site the school board has looked at. But, Bren- twood ferry traffic will not conflict because of ferry boarding times. “At no time will school traffic interfere with Butchart Gardens,” Nyberg said. School board chairman Marilyn Loveless said all the data from three searches the district did has been sent to the commission. “The land commission knows full well what’s available,” Love- less said. But she stopped short from assuming the permitted use application will be approved dur- ing hearings scheduled for mid to late-March. “To this point it has been so unpredictable, the whole process back to 1986 has been so unpre- dictable that I won’t make a pre- diction now.” The school board has done all it can do, she said. Property owned by the Catholic Church across Wallace Drive from Centennial Park was unavailable. And, the old fairgrounds property in Saanichton “was way out of price range,” Loveless said. She pledged that everything would be done by the board to protect the continued safe opera- tion of the Eurosa Gardens com- mercial rose nursery, next to the proposed site. “We have no desire to put him out of business,” Loveless said. “Talk to the neighbors at the present Mt. Newton Middle School.” ; Growth advocate braves N. Saanich The president of the Urban i Development Institute was offered : a medal but his planned growth * proposal was flatly refuted by * North Saanich’s planning and zon- - ing committee Feb. 11. “You have great courage coming across that Amity Road boundary and I think we should strike a medal for you,” Ald. Bill Turner told David Ganong. But aldermen did not agree with the Urban Development Institute’s “Growing Pains” plan for man- agement of growth in the capital region. “More people create more prob- lems,” Ald. Edo Nyland said. Ald. Bill Gordon said North Saanich residents want to keep their present lifestyle and pre- dicted strong resistance to increased development in the area. Ganong argued that 25,000 more housing units will be needed in the area by 2001. North Saanich will have a projected shortage of 450 units, Ganong said. He called for coordinated devel- opment between area municipalit- ies to allow for the increased demand and keep housing afforda- ble. “1 don’t think there’s any rea- sonable way of putting up the drawbridge,” Ganong said. Amalgamation of existing municipalities into three commu- nities, the westem communities, core group and Saanich Peninsula, would also simplify planning, he said. Mayor Maurice Chazottes said the amalgamation proposal was just an attempt to dilute opposition to increased development. “We cherish our individuality as a community,” he said. The Urban Development Insti- tute is not in tune with area residents who want growth con- trolled, he said. The committee received Gan- ong’s presentation for information. dealership. Those living in apartments can ask, when possible, for a wild area, and a wild varied hedge with the shrubs that birds like. Church congrega- tions could plant along part of church property, as could some businesses. All garden centers have planting lists for birds. If all who could would do this, we would have hundreds of areas for birds that they would not otherwise have to feed, nest, and stay warm in. Development is ongoing, and councils should encourage the use of wild hedgerows, or wild planted .berms, as well as native trees, and natural wild areas, as property boundaries. TheReview Please write to your council if you support this idea, or have others, to make our area a little on the “wild side”! This planting is becoming a necessity if we are to Wednesday, February 27,1991 — A8 minimize the loss of our birds. Spring is coming —please plant for them.
