If the teachers are there one minute and not the next, we would use it. It's a defensive action we ve taken.” Cameron said: “It is unfortunate but we have lost an excellent opportunity to bring these negotia- tions to a successful conclusion without disruption to the school system.” Outstanding teacher issues include contracting out of services, supervision, length of the school year, the (teachers’ association) president's pension and payment of bargaining costs. : “Ready said if we want a settle- ment we have to talk about those things,” Loveless said. “Realisti- cally the issues of most impor- tance are class size and integra- tion.” She said those issues were put on the agenda by the mediator “and they refused to meet with us on that. “Tf the union won't tell us what they want we can’t even begin to discuss it with them,” Loveless said. “A good term is negotiations are suspended.” “We're prepared to look for patterns in the province and we're prepared to negotiate around those patterns,” Loveless said: The board has given it their best and “ we hope we can settle it without full out job action,” said. teach through one of the longest school years in the province. She disagrees that the board is negoti- ating for a settlement similar to other districts in the province. “Saanich teachers don’t want to be unique at the low end of the scale.” As well, the supervision clause must be discussed, dealing with teachers in elementary schools she Cameron said that shat _ Saanich district teachers would who spend one hour each day ensuring children get on and off school buses in proper fashion. “That cuts into preparation time, workshops etc.,’” Cameron said. When asked about a possible walkout, Cameron said “that’s a very, very strong possibility,” A salary package offered teach- ers is comparable to others in the province, Loveless said, represent- ing a $1 million deficit for the board and'a 14.7 per cent increase over last year’s salary package. “They haven’t come back to us with meaningful negotiations. We're willing to look at moving money around if asked.” Cameron said a flaw in the proposed salary package is that a “sizable chunk” of salary increas- es won't take effect until June 30, 1992. Teachers want that and other issues settled before class size and integration are put on the table. “Class size and integration are two things the public is very much in support of,’ Cameron said. “If we get those two off the table we would have nothing to go to the public with if we want to go out on strike (should other issues not be settled). ~ “We want to deal with class size and integration, too. But we don’t want to settle their main issue now, GRAND OPENING T.R. Teachers are meeting today to discuss options that include rotat- ing strikes, a full pull-out, or Starting job action with a one-day study session. “Some teachers would like to do it tomorrow, others say Thursday.
