News Logo selected for Sidney Centennial A logo intended to capture the atmosphere of the Peninsula and the Town of Sidney was declared the winner of the 100th Birthday Logo Contest Monday. Designed by semi-retired graph- ic artist Jack Bowley, the oval- shaped rendering beat out 15 other entries with four votes from the seven-member Sidney council. Bowley wins a $100 cash prize for his original design. “The atmosphere of the Penin- sula was something I was trying to capture,” Bowley said Monday night. “There’s a feeling of anti- quity to it really.” Bowley, a new resident of Sid- ney, hand-lettered the unique type style. “I particularly love this free form that fits the shape that it’s allotted,” he said. Bowley is a veteran of hand lettering, having started shortly after leaving art school over 20 years ago, when most signs were hand lettered. He estimates the project took 8-10 hours to com- plete. Business break-in A large number of lottery tick- ets, cigarettes, a small amount of rolled coin and American currency were stolen from Tanner's Book Store overnight Feb. 19-20, Sidney RCMP said. Police are investigating and ask those with information to call Sidney RCMP or Crime Stoppers. Bundle of bills taken from booth A bundle of $20 bills totalling $500 was stolen from an unlocked B.C. Ferries ticket booth at the Swartz Bay terminal sometime before 6 p.m. Thursday. Sidney RCMP said the booth was left unattended prior to the theft. They are investigating and ask those with information to call CrimeStoppers. Vandalized vehicle A car left overnight on the Pat Bay Highway after it ran out of gas was broken into and vandal- ized, Sidney RCMP said. Parked near McDonald Park Road Feb. 19-20, the var ’s dash- board was ripped apart and its stereo damaged. An investigation is Ongoing. In a similar incident, a vehicle also left overnight Feb. 19-20, this time on Laurel Road in North Saanich, was entered. An unsuccessful attempt was made to remove the stereo from that vehicle.
