| Sports e The Peninsula Atom Rep Eagles hockey team battled both influenza and talented opponents last weekend on their way to two wins and one loss. Despite being shorthanded due to the sickness of several players, the Eagles earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Victoria AAA team. In a very fluid end-to-end game, the Eagles didn’t let fatigue get the better of them as they dug deep to come up with an impressive win. “We were pretty happy with the victory because we didn’t have too many bodies on the bench,” Kosick said. Instrumental in the win over the powerful Victoria team was the hard work of a forward line made up of Tommy Kosick, Blake Mun- roe and Ryan Tilden — a line that’s never played together before. Also, Trevor Eeg turned im an outstanding performance in goal, while Garrett Matthews was tire- less in defence. Peninsula goalscorers were Mark Kosick, Jame Pollock and Jeff Antonik. Saturday saw the Eagles suffer an unexpected 3-1 loss to next weekend’s Island championship playoff opponent Cowichan Val- ley, Kosick said. Once again influenza was cited as a reason for the lack of sparkle in the Eagles’ style of play. However, the game proved to be a very close contest that was tied 1-1 until ten minutes from the end. The fully-fit Cowichan Valley team gained the upper hand in the final minutes as sickness took its toll on the weary Peninsula team. “We ran out of steam late in the game. We just couldn’t keep our legs going,” Kosick said. Pollock scored the Eagles” sin- gle goal, while Bryce McFadden did an excellent job by frustrating the Cowichan Valley offence for much of the game. A recent 6-5 loss to the Racquet Club was avenged Feb. 19 when the Eagles blitzed their Victoria- based opponents 7-0. Also Trevor Eeg did a great job in goal, performing many fine saves as he earned a shutout. Spearheading the Eagles’ offence was Mark Kosick, with four goals and three assists. Pollock slotted home two goals and had three assists, while Anto- nik scored once and had two assists. Defenceman Sean Owens also counterattacked well to earn three assists. Kosick hopes his team is back to full strength in time for the Atom Rep League Island playoffs, which begin on Saturday with the Eagles _ taking on Cowichan Valley again. “T think if we get nd of the flu bugs, we have an excellent chance of winning,” he said. “We are also optimistic that we JUST US can win the Island championships.
