Continued from Page Al group, Sibley said) During the four days the group spent in Baghdad, before being flown to Jordan, they were taken briefly to the bazaar, shown a milk factory demolished by bombs and caught glimpses of the damage done by the nightly bombing raids. “We saw the devastated little houses the next day. I knew there had been mothers, fathers and children in there. “They were trying to host us. They were also trying to have us take back to our country a vision of Iraq as a place where ordinary people live. There’s a demoniza-= tion of Arabs going on now,” Sibley said. Like Canadian troops, the Iraqi soldiers are mainly young men 18 to 20 years old, Sibley said. “They go off to do what they’re told, like children. They’re sending off these children to kill each other.” If Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein iS a monster, he is a monster created by an infusion of western weaponry, Sibley said. ‘There was this roar of sound that pressed you info the ground’ Local Quakers support camp The Saanich Peninsula Community of Friends are among the local Quaker communities supporting the Peace Camp in the gulf. A statement by the Gulf Peace Team describes the camp as an international peace presence in the area, established because of concern about the intense suffering, death and environmental devastation resulting from the war. “We as a team distance ourselves from all parties involved, none of whom we consider blameless,” the statement adds. The latest move by the Peace Team, now moved to a camp in Jordan, is to provide volunteer human shields for a convoy of medical supplies into Iraq. V8R 4K4: There are approximately 200 Quakers in the Victoria area, most of whom meet regularly in small groups. The local Quaker community meets monthly in members’ homes. [: > There are meetings, the small groups in which Quakers organize, throughout the world. Decisions by the group are reached through discussion until a consensus is teached. If a consensus cannot be found, no decision is made, explained Elizabeth Beguin, who has been a Quaker for 12 years. “We solemnly believe if we take time and listen to one another, a solution is nearly always found which is agreeable and acceptable,” she said. Quakers eschew conflict in any - form and, in Canada, have no creed, liturgy or ministry, Beguin said. Visitors to meetings are always welcome. “We are not seeking to convert anybody. Quakers are encouraged to learn all they can about other religious faiths,” she said. For more information on the local society, call Joe Barber- Starkey at 652-3592. Known for work promoting peace, disaster relief and prison reform, the Society of Friends was first established in 17th Century England as a fellowship seeking to regain the spiritual principles of early Christianity.
