Magic Colour keeper saves team with tough tie game The Peninsula Magic Colour Division 5A soccer team fought to a hard-earned 1-1 tie with the Cowichan Mall Strikers at Centen- nial Park, Saturday. Colour’s coach John McDonald said his team had much of the run of play but most of his team’s Scoring Opportunities were shut down by Cowichan’s tight check- ing. The visitors opened the scoring at the 20-mimute mark after a - Colour defender failed to clear the ball out of his team’s penalty area. A Cowichan forward pounced on the ball and fired a shot past goalkeeper Brian Timms and into the back of the net, McDonald said. Colour came back strong with good scoring chances created by Jon Goulet, Lee Dryden, Mason Walker and Darrell Underwood. Near the end of the first half, Colour finally tied the score with a goal from Chris Gray. Gray scored with a fine header after Guss Momis fired a pinpoint comer kick straight to his team- mate. Cowichan’s keeper got his hands to the ball but he wasn’t able to stop it from crossing the line. The second half saw several good scoring chances for both sides but neither team was able to Capitalize on them. Colour’s keeper Timms made three excellent saves late in the game to keep Cowichan off the scoresheet, McDonald said. Panthers pump up for playoffs Shrugging off another recent narrow loss, the Parkland Panthers senior boys’ basketball team coach Joe Milligan said Monday his team is back on form just in time for the playoffs. “T think if we play like we did last week, we could certainly chal- lenge for a berth to the Islands,” he said. The Greater Victoria senior boys’ high school league playoffs begin tomorrow and will feature the top eight teams in the league. Only the top four teams will qualify for a shot at the Vancouver Island playoffs, while one wildcard berth is also be open to a fifth placed team. The talented Parkland team has struggled in recent weeks, often running out of steam in the crucial final stages of games, especially against stiff competition. Inconsistency has also plagued the Sidney team, which can stand up to the best teams on the Island on a good day. Signaling a return to the impres- sive form they displayed last fall, the Panthers played a very close games against league leader SMUS, Thursday. The cliffhanger game saw the Panthers edged 61-60, even though they played an “excellent game,” Milligan said. “Tt was a really close game throughout and was even tied with 40 seconds left,” he said. But a three-point basket scored by SMUS in the dying seconds proved to be the winning shot as the Panthers were only able to claw back two more points to narrow the deficit to one point. Strong offensive play and’ “very solid defending” by the Panthers kept them in contention against the talented SMUS team in a game that proved once against that the Panthers are no pushover. Looking most dangerous on the offensive was Parkland’s Justin Gayler who scored 31 of his team’s 60 points. xiarm labour x landscaping * greenhouse labour AGRICULTURAL EMPLOYMENT SERVICES A FREE SERVICE TO EMPLOYERS & EMPLOYEES lf you are a reliable worker looking for work or are an employer looking for reliable employees in the following areas: on a full time, part time or casual basis, contact us at 2661 Douglas Street, Victoria, phone 382-7201, Siculture * construction xgeneral labour Monday - Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm. ae LOCATION! !
