News Wednesday, February 20,1991 — A1i4 Hall of Fame inductees to be named at reunion Peninsula Old Time Racers will join others in the auto racing fraternity at the new auto racing Hall of Fame at Western Speedway Saturday. The special reunion for all past and present members of the auto racing fraternity, families, friends and fans will feature the 1991 induction of two racing personalit- ies into the Hall of Fame, commit- tee chairman Ross Rockett said. In addition to the ceremonies, there will be a variety of displays from past and present as well as much good fellowship and fun. The names of the two inductees will not be announced prior to the 3 p.m. presentation ceremony, but they will join previous inductees such as Billy Foster, the first Canadian ever to race in the Indi- anapolis 500; Bruce Passmore of Langford Specdway fame; Andy Cottyn, the man who built Westem \pcedway; Jim Haslam, Bob Van- treight, Reg Midgley, Bing Foster, Geoff Vantreight, Frank Kitto, Phil Hendry, Dick Midgley and Ron Mayell — who were all deeply associated as cither owners, build- ers, promoters, sponsors or offi- cials. Also in the Hall of Fame are renowned drivers Dick Wil- loughby, Dave Cooper, Al Smith, Dick Varley, Gary: Kershaw, Digger O’Dell, Nibbs Anderson and Ross Surgenor. “The inductees for 1991 will join a very impressive list of past racing personalities,’ Rockett said. The reunion will also be a chance for past and present racers, their families, friends and fans to get together again and renew old acquaintances and do some bench racing (commonly called lie swapping). A special added attraction to this years function is the highlight- ing of the year 1961. We urge anyone who was associated with the sport during this year 1o attend. A giant Racers Swap Meet is being held in conjunction with the reunion to begin at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the aftemoon. Suicide attempt stopped Central Saanich police found several men trying to stop a 22- year-old Victoria man from jump- ing in front of cars travelling on the Pat Bay Highway near Tanner Road, about 3:50 a.m. Feb. 9. Deputy police Chief George Lawson said an officer on patrol found six men and one woman trying to restrain the man. “The individual was being held down when he said he was ready to meet Jesus,” Lawson said.
