ao ry News TheReview Wednesday, February 13,1991 — A13 Consultant hired to examine interchange Central Saanich council agreed Monday to hire a consultant to Study the impact the Island View interchange will have on the munic- ipality. Derek Wild of D.W. Engineering Ltd. was hired to look into various issues involving the interchange including traffic patterns, potential cost to the municipality and envir- omnental concerns. Council agreed there is a need to quantify and to identify all poten- lial problems associated with the interchange. Hence, areas of concern may be presented to the Ministry of High- ways prior to the start of construc- tion of the interchange. If the problems are flagged early enough, the Ministry of Highways may be convinced to pay the cost of solving them, he added. The best way to “quantify these issues” could be to conduct a traffic and transportation study that could cost as much as $80,000, Wild said. ~The size of the study depends a lot on what convinces the high- ways ministry,” he said. Ald. Clarence Bolt described the hiring of the consultant ‘an investment in the future.” Wild was retained at a cost of $100 per month for three hours work each month on an annual basis initially for one year. Real estate sales good despite trend In spite of a slump in housing sales, a total of a nearly $7 million worth of residential housing changed hands on the Peninsula last month. A Victoria Real Estate Board spokesman said real estate prices in the region have remained buoy- ant for the past eight months in defiance of a declining national trend. Anne St. Dennis said North Saanich was edged out by Oak Bay in the table of highest median prices for the 13 regional munici- palities polled in January. Some 11 homes were sold in ‘North Saanich at a median price of $210,000, compared to Oak Bay’s median figure of $218,000 for the 15 housing units that sold there. The total value of all the homes sold in North Saanich was $2.8 million, compared to $4 million for Oak Bay. Central Saanich saw 13 homes find new owners, making the median price $168,000, for a total value of $2.4 million. In Sidney, 13 housing units changed hands at a median price of $137,000, which amounted to $1.8 million worth of real estate. By comparison, the median price of a home for the whole district was $157,000 last month, St. Dennis said.
