Community A $273,333 GO B.C. contribu- tion toward the cost of building a fieldhouse at Centennial Park is a “fantastic” boost to the project, the Central Saanich Lions Club president said Thursday. Harry Johnson said his organi- zation was delighted to receive the funding, especially since he had feared the GO B:C. grant system may have been axed before his club’s application was approved. The cheque was presented to the Lions Club by Saanich and the Islands MLA Mel Couvelier prior to the start of the Feb. 4 Central Saanich council meeting. The award is intended to cover which hopefully will start con- struction in the late summer, John- son said. However, the facility — which will also act as a community hall -— may never be used by the Lions Club because the members may hold on to their present meeting place, he said. The club has a hall on East Saanich Road that no longer appears to face the threat of being torn down to make way for the Island View Interchange, he said. “Tt looks as though the Island View (interchange) road will go to the south of us now, so we plan to hall will be fixed up by members for continued use. The club also intends to renew its five-year lease on the building on Oct. 1. “But if the hall has to go we want the right to go into the fieldhouse,”’ Johnson said. Featuring changing rooms and a concession area for baseball play- ers, the fieldhouse will also have two meeting halls and a kitchen for community functions. While the municipality is expected to pay one-third of the cost of the building, the Lions Club plans to donate $100,000 in cash and $150,000 worth of labor towards ifs construction. tReview soon as possible, which should be when the architectural designs are completed,” he said. 9813- Wednesday, February 13, 1991 = A12 C.
