Come-back on Cowichan killed by clock The Peninsula Atom Rep Eagles hockey team posted an unexpected loss Saturday but bounced back the next day to defeat the top up-Island team. “Eagles’ coach Murray Kosick said his team tured in an inspired performance Sunday to outgun, high-flying Parksville 7-4. Stinging from a 6-4 loss to Cowichan, the Eagles played an aggressive hard-skating game to show. the visitors their mettle. Despite dominating the play early on, the Peninsula team fell behind 2-0, Kosick said. Undaunted, the Eagles intensi- fied the pressure to level the score before Parksville took a 3-2 lead once again just before the break. Ryan Tilden and Mark Camp- bell each scored for the Eagles. Great goaltending by Parkville’s last line of defence played a major role in keeping the game very competitive, Kosick said. “But in the second period we continued to dominate and with more hard-skating, the kids began to capitalize on their opportuni- ties,” he said. Three unanswered goals — two from Danny Draggert and a single from Campbell — put the Eagles in charge in the second period, he said. But the driving force behind for the Eagles’ termific comeback was the hard work of Blake Munroe and Greg Gerrich. “Both played terrific, forecheck- ing and backchecking very well, nullifying Parksville’s attacks: _ And they also created many scor- ing chances,” Kosick said. The strong defensive work of Sean Owens and Jame Pollock also helped muzzle the visitors’ offensive potential, he said. An evener third period saw the Eagles once again outscore Parks- ville, this time by 2-1 to ensure themselves a convincing victory. Gerrich and Mark Kosick were the two Peninsula goalscorers in the last period. Saturday night’s performance was not one of the Eagles’ best, partly due to the fact that some of the players were still weak from a recent bout of influenza, Kosick said. Hardcover. 515 pages. $27.95 | Presumed Innocent, Scott Turow’s first crime novel, on the New York Times pesteeller for forty-four weeks, sold over five million | | copies. 1 His encore, The Sader of Proof, is another whodunit. Alejandro | Stern, the defense lawyer from Presumed Innocent, comes home from work to find that Clara, his wife of thiny years, has mysteriously committed suicide. Even as he mourns, Stern is drawn back to the law — as defender of his financial buccaneer brother-in-law who Is the subject of a federal investigation. Turow’s basic challenge is to keep the plot twists coming fast enough to hook readers on the book's unsolved mysteries. After a series of these twists we finally discover, among other things, why Clara ended her own life: she had herpes. It may be presumed innocent, but in these days of fatal social diseases, am | seriously expected to believe a person would kill herself over a case of cold sores? Turow employs several strategies in an attempt to make this a literary” suspense novel. The first ts to faithfully recreate a numbingly complex milieu — the commodity future market in Chicago. The details of buying and selling pork belly contracts, E}) however, are confusing, and, most of the time, uninspiring. 1 Another strategy, exploration of character, is where the author runs — F into real trouble. The Creative Writer in him takes over during these || interludes, so when Stern falls in love, Turow writes, his “blood | F. carried an electrical charge;” when disappointed In love he is “up to is chin in the heavy glop of something like heartbreak, which held im fast as quicksand.” People lying on lawn chairs this summer ooking for a “good read” are also likely to be disappointed.
