So far, she has 100 books. | “Books are very expensive here. | Not many people can afford to pay, books,” she said. “There’s nothing for the chil- dren to read at home.” When the children cannot prac- tice their reading skills it is harder \ for them to learn, Ncube explained. Most are limited to the textbooks in the classroom and to their own written work. “Tf they take enough notes, they can read out of their notes,” Neube said. The 127 children in the village Tange in age from three months to “18 years. Most are orphans or abandoned youngsters taken in by the Austrian-based charitable organization. As director of the village, Ncube oversees the operation of 11 five- bedroom homes, each housing 11 to 12 children, an SOS mother and an SOS aunt. Each group operates as much like a family as possible. Each house mother has a food allowance for meals and a clothing allowance for each child. Donor sponsorships also help defray education and clothing costs. Children are encouraged to complete basic schooling. Superstition led some women to fear the child’s ancestors would harass the foster mother. The ladies have now proven that is not possible,” Ncube said.
