AN News Cyclist hit A nine-year-old North Saanich boy is recovering in Victoria Gen- eral Hospital from a broken leg and head injuries received after being hit by a car about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Apparently the young lad entered Landsend Road from a private driveway, crossing the path of an eastbound 1974 Volvo, Sid- ney RCMP said. The boy was rushed to Saanich Peninsula Hospital and later trans- ferred to Victoria General, where he was listed in satisfactory condi- tion. Police are still investigating the accident. No charges have been laid against a 36-year-old Sidney woman driving the Volvo. Suspect caught in Buick theft A 19-year-old Sidney man is charged with possession of stolen property after Central Saanich police stopped a stolen 1986 Buick on Keating Crossroad, about 12:55 a.m. Jan. 29. Sidney RCMP responded to a -break and enter at Budget Rent-a- car about 10:45 p.m. Jan. 28 and discovered the office ransacked and the keys to a Buick had been stolen. After a description of the vehi- cle was sent to other police forces Central Saanich Cst. John Teague stopped the vehicle westbound on Keating Crossroad and arrested the lone occupant. Another Sidney man in his late teens has also been charged in connection with the offence, Sid- ney RCMP said. Island View golf course will drive price of farmland higher A second Island View area far- mer has joined Steven Jack in condemning a proposed champi- onship golf course for Island View in Central Saanich, : Wilmer Michell of Michell Brothers Farms told council in a recent letter that an 18-hole golf course at Lamont Road and Puckle Road would have a “negative impact” on the area. About 70 acres of marginal Agricultural Land Reserve farm- Jand that constitutes part of the 178 acres slated for development is viable farmland, he said. Building on this land would put “further pressure” on both prime farmland in all of Central Saanich and on the Michell Brothers 225- acre farm, he said. Crops such as lettuce, carrots, beets and com can be grown on parts of the pnmarily Grade 5 tract of farmland that makes up part of the proposed golf course site, he said. Also, plans to build about a dozen houses on the golf course site also alarm him, he said last week. _ Michell said the golf course would also lead to further encroachment of urban sprawl, which is already taking part at the south end of the McHugh Valley. Further, a golf course develop- ment would drive up farmland prices even higher in Central Saa- nich, which is not good for the farming business, he said. “I'm not against golf courses. I’m just against golf courses on agricultural land,” he said.
