Fire losses
take downturn

A dramatic downward trend in
fire losses has Sidney Volunteer
Fire Department inspector Larry
Buchanan very happy.

Last year saw estimated fire
losses at below $10,000 — with-
out a single serious house fire —
which is “exceptional,” he said.

Estimated fire losses for 1990
were valued at $9,825, while
1989’s figure was $87,469, com-
pared to the whopping $251,317
figure for the year before.

“The last couple of years are
exceptional because the public had
become better educated and far
more conscious, concerning fire
safety awareness,” he said.

Among the 70 incidents the
Sidney fire detachment responded
to last year were 13 residential
fires (extinguished before they
could do any appreciable damage),
16 vehicle accidents and five com-
mercial/industrial fires.

Also worthy of note is that ten
probationary firemen passed the
grade last year to become full-
fledged firemen, making the vol-
unteer compliment 35 members.
