TheReview Wednesday, February 6, 1991 — A3 WHALE FACTS. This photograph, donated to the Sidney Museum and taken by Paul Commandeur from the sailboat Gumboo?, is of a Dall’s porpoise. These small, chunky porpoises can commonly be seen in local waters riding boat bow waves. Moth meeting well attended About 80 Peninsula residents found what to look for when searching for Gypsy Moths as Agriculture Canada promoted its efforts to eradicate the pest from - Butish Columbia last week. Most homeowners in North Saa- nich are in favor of a spray pro- gram, plant health division spo- kesman Shane Sella said. Sella said that bacillus thurin- giensis, or Bt, is a very specific bacteria that kills only gypsy moths and can eradicate the pest if found in small numbers. A spraying program similar to one used in Fort Langley, Parks- ville and Courtenay will likely be carried out in April and May when the moth is in its caterpillar stage. But first, all areas where the gypsy moth lives must be found. Residents at a meeting in McTavish Elementary School Drunk driver Hitting a power pole in a 1978 Chev resulted in an impaired driy- ing charge and a ride to the hospital for a 23-year-old Sidney man, after 10:40 p.m. Jan. 24. Central Saanich police said the van apparently went out of control and hit the pole on Wallace Drive neat Woodward Drive, causing an estimated $8,000 damage. The man was rushed to hospital with injuries. A blood sample revealed the driver to have a blood- alcohol level above the legal limit, police said. The man is also charged with having no denyers licence. FIRST MOVIE FREE Thursday were told that 36 egg masses with about 800 eggs each were found in the McTavish- Cresswell area. The caterpillar is recognizable by six pairs of red dots along its back, with long, spiny hair, ranging in six from two to six millimetres, usually appearing in late-April until June. Once it becomes a moth, a female is recognized by its cream color and two distinct black arrow marks on its wings. The male moth is brown in color and has two characteristic feathered antennae, Sella said. Both range in size from a 25 cent-piece to a dollar coin. Persons finding these caterpil- lars or moths are asked to put them in a bottle and call 363-3421 for Sella or Doug Kyle. The moth is responsible for extensive destruction in Eastern Canada and Agriculture Canada intends to eradicate the Peninsula of it, not just control it, Sella said. Future bright for leukemia victim by Mare Davis The Review After months of waiting for a suitable donor, Sidney resident Jayson Lenaghan, 16, will be soon get a life-saving bone marrow transplant. The spunky Parkland Secondary student, who has acute leukemia, left Vancouver General Hospital in mid-January, boosted by the know- ledge that he’ll soon be leading a normal life again. “It’s a great feeling to be home,” he said after spending nearly 20 weeks in an isolation ward at VGH. The operation is expected to take place sometime before the end of February. Lenaghan’s apprehension that problems may have developed with what doctors described in December as a “tentative donor” have given way to relief now that the transplant is going ahead. “(We) didn’t get too excited at first because everything could have fallen through,” he said. “But I guess I’m now kind of happy that everything’s all set.” After spending much of her time by the bedside in Vancouver since late August, Pat Lenaghan is thril- led to have him home.
