inauguration of the Victoria and Sidney railway in 1894. Fueled by cordwood, the V & Swas

affectionately known as the ~“Cordwood Express. ~~

For 50 cents, a passenger could travel

from Sidney to Victoria and back in onehour and 40 minutes. The railway not only provided
a speedy route fo Victoria but played a large part in the development of the Sidney

area.

Berglund promises ‘hefty’ legal battle

Central Saanich’s legal bills will
likely spiral’ well into five figures
as a result of legal action, devel-
oper John Berlund said Friday.

Saying he’ll contend the validity
of council’s argument for killing
the Brentwood Lakes Golf Course
proposal Jan. 21, Berglund wants
“the best lawyer (he) can get to
pursue this matter with vigor”

“T'll definately be proceeding
with legal action,” he said.

Despite the likely hefty cost 10.

Central Saanich taxpayers for the~
legal battle, he*s received as of

“Tve had numerous calls of
support from residents of Central
Saanich saying they'd like to see
legal action,” he said.

The total cost in legal fees
incured by the municipality so far
was not available.

Central to Berglund’s case is the
argument that Mayor Ted Jones
cannot substantiate his objections

to the planned golf course.
Berglund said documentation
given to him by the province’s
Agricultural Land Commission
proves his 141-acre property at
Maber Flats sits on Class 3 farm-

land — not the Class 2 farmland -

claimed by Jones.

“You can virtually grow any-
thing on organic soil. It’s like
peat,” Jones said.

“The actual classification as to
whether it’s Class 2 or Class 3 is
