| Community Workshop planned for creative writers A workshop for creative writers to meet on the Peninsula once a week to share ideas and analyze each other’s work is being planned to begin in April — if local interest is sufficiently high. Iris Jones, of the 35-member Victoria Scriveners group in Oak Bay, wants to encourage writers who are past the teaching stage of the writing process but need“‘to share what they have learned and develop their own styles.” “Teaching-style classes some- times leave no room for our own creativity,” she said. An arrangement has been made for the use of a room at the Panorama Leisure Centre to hold Wednesday evening meetings, pro- vided workshop participants are leisure centre members, Jones said. “This is good for stretching the mind as well as the body,” Jones said. Members from the Scriveners group in Oak Bay found weekly meetings very helpful and several members have now had their work published in newspapers and mag- azines, she said. The Victoria group also sub- scribes to a Burnaby-based news- letter that informs readers about upcoming events and writing com- petitions. Jones is interested in the therapy of writing and emphasizes that writing comes from deep inside a person. “Tf you want to feel euphoria, write!” “If you want to feel excitement, write!” “Tf you want to feel emotionally unburdened, write!” Jones feels that while juggling with words and phrases the mind is active im a creative way; it is The Review provides this community calendar free of charge, space permitting.
