[P Community Helping to solve conflicts between parents and their children can sometimes be as easy as teaching them to listen to one another. So said Peninsula Community Association program coordinator Bill Scott, who will run a “preven- tative training program” designed to enhance family relationships, Starting next week. “The sessions are for parents and children to learn to communi- cate with one another and to - problem solve together,” he said. Entitled Averting Conflict Together, the program is aimed at adults and at children aged between five and ten years old, he said. Suggestions that the program should be aimed at rebellious teenagers, rather than pre- pubescent children are swept aside by Scott. It’s never too early to teach a young child and its parents to open up two-way communication lines that can last a lifetime and which early in the upbringing process, he said. “Conflict 1s a daily occurrence and people need skills to deal with it. There are very few programs around to deal with conflict reso- lution,” he added. Problems associated with teen- agers such as curfews, dating and drugs and alcohol can often be headed off if parents and their offspring learn to understand each other’s point of view from an early age, he said. ““ACT stresses an emotional TheReview partnership between the parents and the children,” he said. “Problems are seen as chal- lenges to be resolved jointly and with the equal involvement of all concemed.” One group of five- to seven- year-olds and another group of eight- to ten-year-olds will join parents in the course to examine conflicts while under the guidance of Scott and fellow coordinator Elaine Venables.
