Business | BARNA CLE- FREE IS the ‘area around two Perma- Foil panels on a fiberglass sheet that was left in Pat Bay for five months. TheReview Wednesday, January 30, 1991 ; : 4 Sidney firm sole distributor of boat sheathing + Never paint your bottom again is what a Sidney distributor is telling boat Owne;rs. McKinnon Distributing is the sole Canadian distributor for Per- ma-Foil International Inc., which manufactures a copper-nickel sheathing that is installed on boat hulls using a 3-M adhesive back- ing. “They ve tried to put copper on boats for 2,000 years now,” said distributing company owner Bren- dan McKinnon. “They've tried nailing it on, welding it on, but nothing seemed to work, until this.” The sheathing is a perfect anti- foulant that not only protects a boat’s bottom from bamacles and other affects of salt water, but also slightly increase the vessel’s speed and cuts its consumption of gas, McKinnon said. Boat owners can expect to pay three-four per cent of the value of their boat for Perma-Foil to be applied, but the product is guar- anteed. Pacific Yachting magazine is currently conducting a test of boat bottom products, including Perma- Foil. A total of 13 substances, including various paint products, have been applied to a boat moored at False Creek in Van- couver. Every three months the boat is pulled into dry dock for inspection. But McKinnon is confident his product will come out on top. A small plate of Perma-Foil was installed on a piece of fiberglass that was immersed in Pat Bay for five months. The fiberglass was covered with barnacles, except for an area around and on top of the Perma-Foil, when it was removed. “Five years from now most of the new boats being manufactured will come out with Perma-Foil if common sense prevails,” McKin- non said. Recent regulation changes in Canada have outlawed’ tin-baseq— paint, following the lead the Uni ed States took several years ago.® Now, in the U.S., boaters face fines up to $25,000, plus a year in jail, for knowingly using tin-based paint. Perma-Foil must be installed by qualified installers, McKinnon said, because hull preparation is so: important. The copper-nickel alloy based: sheathing is installed in over- lapping layers, then sealed.
