oS INTERCHANGE PARAMEDIC ATTENDS TO an injured 86-year-old woman who apparently turned in front of a BC Transif van (inset) at the intersection of Wain Road and the highway, about 2:30 p.m. Friday. Continued from Page Al The public showed it prefers this site over two other alternatives by a margin of two to one, as reflected in a questionnaire, Singer said. And the Island View site makes the best sense because it will have the least impact on pedestrian traffic and on residential areas, although it will use about 8.2 hectares of Agricultural Land Reserve farmland, Singer said. The ministry project planner refuted Ald. Clarence Bolt’s sug- gestions that the interchange will seriously disrupt traffic patterns for people living on Keating Ridge. ; But he admitted that traffic problems at Sayward Road and Haliburton Road could develop as a result of the closing of most of the existing access roads to the highway. “We recommended an inter- change at Sayward Road but the public didn’t want it,” Singer said. Also, no decision has yet been made as to what to do about the Tanner Road access to the high- way, he said. But it won’t be closed off until an alternative travel route for Tan- ner Road residents has been found, he said. _ The public must realize the interchange will not, however, deal with potential future traffic prob- lems that will arise from popula- tion growth on the Peninsula and increased tourism, he said. “Our plans are not based on future problems and growth pat- tems ... they are based on today’s concems,” he said. “We're only going to address current safety and operational problems.” Long-term traffic problems would have been’ dealt with by upgrading the highway to freeway Status but the public quashed that proposal, he said, ~.
