TheReview Wednesday, January 23,1991 — C4 LO es = Chef two-time winner AS Raceway, Intertrack wagering successful but fans call for larger television monitors In spite of -the recent bad weather, horse racing fans have turned out by the hundreds for intertrack betting at Sandown Har- ness Raceway. Sandown Harness Race Club spokesman Lynn Wonnenberg said a cozy betting environment and - attractive payouts are turning many people on to simulcast wagering. Betting on standardbred races held at Cloverdale Raceway on the Lower Mainland attracted up to 700 fans at Sandown on Saturday 4 and Sunday, she said. “Now the weather is better, ~ people are Starting to return in much larger numbers,” she said. By wagering on races at bigger Lower Mainland tracks, punters have the chance to win double the purse offered by live standardbred racing at Sandown, Wonnenberg said. About 11 races will be staged at each meet for the track-to-track simulcast betting, and about 45 meets should be held between Jan. 1 and Apr. 8. However, the recent inclement weather forced the cancellation of four of the season’s first ten race dates, she said. And with the exception of the opening day, enthusiasm for the other six dates was dampened by peoples’ reluctance to drive to the track in the icy conditions. “The nightmare weather caused low attendances, even though the ’ betting is all done indoors and in the warmth,” she said. Attendance figures averaged at about 300 people per meet, as compared to last season’s average of about 500 people for the whole season. : However, this year’s first day of simulcast betting was a great suc- cess, with about 750 people show- ing up at the New Year's Day meet, she said. But the turnout could be much higher if the track’s operators did more to replicate the atmosphere and excitement of live racing, some race fans argue. _ Sidney resident Gerry Lubeck said overcrowding in the track’s main building makes it difficult to place bets and the facility’s televi- sion monitors just don’t measure up. “The pictures are hazy and the screens are too small. So, you can’t see the numbers on the horses,” Lubeck said. More screens should be added to accommodate the larger crowds that show up on weekends and on holidays, he said. Also the screens should be much larger to make the races easier to follow, he said. He’d be much happier to see teletheatre betting in offtrack bet- ting parlors such as hotel and pub lounges, but he still goes to San- down “because it’s the only game + A Dunsmuir Lodge chef was a big winner — for the second time — in The Review’s Score Big Football Contest, recently. Craig Rogers won $1,000 for beimg the closest entry to correctly guessing the NEL football winners in the final week because it wasn’t perfect,” Roge said. Se Rogers’ entry only missed one game, involving the New York Jets. Last year Rogers won $700 in The Review's football contest. He has no plans for the prize _ money, but said it sure came in HORSE RACING FANS fans stand glued to an overhead televisio live horse racing from Cloverdale Raceway for simulcast betting at Sandown Harness in town.” Fellow horse racing fan Thelma Gardner, who has been going to Sandown with her husband since it opened over 30 years ago, said she likes the simulcast wagering. “T really like it because it gives you a chance to socialize with other people and it’s nice and warm inside,” she said. But she too is concemed that the television monitors are both too “T didn’t think 'd win this time handy after Christmas.
