Loney has had a distinguished career aS a volunteer fireman ever since joming the service at the age of 18, Sidney Volunteer Fire Department inspector Larry Buchanan said. Until his recent promotion, Loney served for eight years as the fire captain and was voted fireman of the year by his Sidney col- leagues in 1988 for his leadership, enthusiasm and dedication to the job, Buchanan said. “Also, as a firefighter he’s always the first or second guy to get out to a fire. He makes himself available all the time,” he said. The young fire chief is used to juggling his job with the demands the fire department has placed on him and has attended hundreds of fires, fire training officer Peter - Harrison said. “He’s also the kind of guy who is not afraid to get dirty and he’ll always put his personal safety to one side if he’s trying to save someone in a fire,” he said.
