Kick off fo 91 at Stelly’s

The after-Christmas start back
to school was a slow and cold one
with many students having trans-
portion problems due to the
extreme weather. Now. everything
is back to normal and there is the
usual amount of activity.

The GST_has made itself home
at Stelly’s. The price of pop has

risen from 85 cents to $1. Prices in
the cafeteria have also risen,
though only slightly.

Kitchen business manager Gail
Jacob, explained that students only
pay the new tax on carbonated
drinks and deserts. Teachers will
pay tax on main meals, but all
customers will be exempt from
paying GST on fresh fruit, pure
juice, and milk.

The Dining Room, open to the
public on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
has now re-opened.

The best news Stelly’s has
received is that the school board
has succeeded in convincing the
Ministry of Education that Stelly’s

needs an addition to accommodate
our growing population.

The school’s population is
expected to increase to 900
from 750 over the next two to
three years. Already there are
nine portables on the grounds.
Stelly’s will receive $500,000
for planning for 1992-93, and
over $7 million for construction
in 1992-93.

A committee of staff, stu-
dents, and parents will be work-
ing together to decide how the
new addition can benefit the
school most.

Fraser Syme’s Writing 12/
Composition 11 class was vis-
ited by writer Mark Jarman on
Wednesday the 16th. He talked
about his experience and
passed on advice for aspiring
young writers.

The staff of the school news-
paper “The Sting”? have been
invited to cover the National
Principal’s Conference to be
held at Victoria Conference
Centre in March of this year.

Exams are scheduled for

Thursday and Friday the 24th
and 25th, and Monday and
Tuesday the 28th and 29th.
