Greai concert raises money for food bank, male singers wanted It was an enthusiastic audience that greeted the Peninsula Singers, under the baton of Eric Westlake, when they presented their winter concert Jan. 15 at the Royal Cana- dian Legion Hall on Mills Road. Bad weather had forced cancel- lation of the same event planned for December. The program included English and American folk songs together with Broadway show selections. The female voices in “Linden Lea” and “Shenandoah” sounded particularly good, but the men’s selections lacked depth, a Singers’ spokesman said. A modem note was struck with a piece from Andrew Lloyd Web- ber’s “Phantom of the Opera.” Incidentally, the choir is seeking more male voices. Solos were rendered by Susan Roberts, Debbie Lawrence, Doreen Abbott-Smith and Irene Tucker. The concert ended with a lively rendition of Irving Berlin’s “Stepping out with my Baby.” Allen St. Clair was the able accompanist. The event raised $650.50 for the Sidney Lions/Review Food Bank. The organization thanked the Royal Canadian Legion for the generous donation of the hall to hold the concert in. Another concert is planned for May and organizers said that any interested male singers who would like to get involved can simply attend a Tuesday evening practice at the Legion hall on Mills Road, Tuesdays starting at 7:30 p.m. SIDNEY MUSEUM photo More for water North Saanich residents will see an 18 per cent hike in their water bills in the near future.
