Business ss TheReview Wednesday, January 23, 1991 =o Victoria Chamber members support amalgamation, survey says by Mare Davis The Review An overwhelming majority of reater Victona Chamber of Com- erce members support regional algamation, a group of Penin- ula businessmen were told Thurs- ay. The president of the Chamber’s reater Victoria chapter, Carol “Didier, said 86 per cent of respon- -dents supported amalgamation in a “November poll. » Didier was addressing about 30 members of the-Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting in Sidney. About 44 per cent of respon- dents want some form of consoli- dation of the district’s ten munici- palities, while 42 per cent want all the Jocal governments to unite, she said. Most proponents of amalgama- tion support forming three new Jurisdictions — including one comprised of the Peninsula’s three municipal governments. However, some respondents who want to see self-government con- linucd in cach municipality, said they support amalgamation of fire, -police and sanitation services, she said. “I would say over 90 per cent of the people polled would like to see an integration of these services,” she said. But she’d be anxious to see if the general population supports an end to the district’s ten independ- ant community governments. ~ We want to go into this with an open mind and listen to all sides,” she said. But if the support is there, then her organization would ‘“‘work very very hard to have amalgama- tion come about,” she said. Supporters of the idea argue that it would result in more efficient and less expensive public services, as well as better regional planning, she said. But opponents of the move fear a deterioration of the unique qual- ity of life offered by each com- munity, she said. The unification of a dozen municipalities worked for Winni- peg, when they were incorporated into a single jurisdiction about 20 years ago, she said. But it took about ten years to fully implement and would proba- bly take just as long for the Capital Regional District, she added. nue CAN ATIARR The War Amps of Canada IN th SS MIKE GRENBY Ce Certified General Accountants Association of British Columbia MONEY MAGIC SHOW qx LEARN yy When you can afford to retire yz How long your money will last after you retire yw Tax tips that can save you thousands of dollars vw The Top Ten Steps to Greater Wealth Mike Grenby—Independent personal financial advisor, award-winning money columnist, author, radio and TV personality—can help you save tax, invest successfully and retire richer whatever your age.
