Sports Atoms score 25 in two exhibition games A calculator was needed to keep tally of all the goals scored by the South Vancouver Island Atom Rep league leaders last weekend. The Peninsula Eagles hockey team scored 25 goals in two exhi- bition games in Powell River. The two “friendly” games saw. the Eagles tie the home team 8-8 Saturday, followed by a barnstorm- ing 17-3 win the next day. On Sunday, a well-rested Eagles team put on a real goalscoring show to let Powell River know they weren’t going to repeat their lackluster performance of the night before. “The boys are used to winning and a tie like the one on Saturday is treated like a loss,” Eagles coach Murray Kosick said. “So Sunday we really socked it to them. The players were really pumped up and raring to go.” The first period of action saw a confident Powell River side keep the Eagles in check with a 3-3 scoreline. TOPPLE But the Eagles “swung into high gear’ in the second period and there was no looking back from then on, as they went on to score 14 unanswered goals during the rest of the game. “Our passing was really sharp and we played a great team- oriented game,” Kosick said. “Our transition game is improy- ing with every outing and that’s due to the fact that we have a solid defensive core that also has great offensive talent.” A shell-shocked Powell River didn’t know what hit them after playing what must have seemed like a different team from the one they tied the night before. A long road trip on Saturday, which included a hectic schedule of fun activities, drained Kosick’s team of energy even before the players took to the ice. So the Eagles weren’t exactly firing on all cylinders when they struggled to an 8-8 tie against an energized Powell River team. However, the Peninsula players managed to hold the home team to a 5-5 scoreline by the end of the second period. And it was only at the outset of the third period that Powell River outpaced the Eagles’ tired legs to pull ahead 8-6, Kosick said. But the Peninsula side — which isn’t used to that losing feeling — rallied to “find some energy reserves and to come back fight- ing,” he said. With ten minutes left, the Eagles put Powell River on the defensive with a barrage of shots that pro- duced two crucial goals and pro- vided several more great scoring chances. “We really had Powell River hanging on by their fingernails in the last few minutes,” Kosick said. The Eagles’ never-say-die atti- tude partly explains why the Peninsula team now has a very impressive record of 37 wins, six losses and three ties. Continued from Page C5 when it counted most. Jeremy Morrow paced Park- land’s scoring with 15 points, while Steve Lefebvre was only a single point astray of his six-foot- six teammate’s tally. High praise was also given to Korby Grist, who eared plenty of steals and also racked up 10 points. A disappointing 74-68 league loss that could easily have been averted was administered to Park- land by Mt. Doug, Thursday. Milligan said his team played well below par for the first three quarters and then staged a late comeback to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter — but time was not on Parkland’s side. But it was too late,” he said. Uncharacterisucally poor defen- sive play that involved far too many throw-aways proved to be the Panthers’ undoing for much of the game. In earlier league action, Park- land dumped Vic High 74-25 Jan. 15 in a game that saw the home team prove its defence can be a real tour de force on a good day. Milligan said his team’s defence held up to all kinds of pressure while the offence wore the oppo- nents down more and more as ihe game went on. STYLE Ton How LitD. foxes for The FuTupe 9210 E.
